The Mysterious Lake Maracaibo

In today's time, science has made a lot of progress, but despite this, there are some such mysterious places on earth, whose scientists have failed to solve the mystery. A similar place is also in the South American country of Venezuela, where there is lightning all the time over a lake. But the reason behind this is not known till date. Although lightning never flashes twice in the same place in the sky, but you will be surprised to know that lightning flashes thousands of times over this unique lake.

This mystery that shocked the world is called 'Beacon of Maracaibo'. It has many other names, such as Catatumbo Lightning, Everlasting Storm, Dramatic Role of Thunder. This place is also called the natural power house of the world.

The place where the Catatumbo River joins Lake Maracaibo in Venezuela has 260 storm days a year. During the stormy nights of these 260 days, there is lightning throughout the night.

The name of Lake Maracaibo is recorded in the Guinness Book as the place with the most lightning. There is less in the winter season, but there is a lot of lightning here in the rainy season. During the rainy season, lightning flashes here 28 times every minute.

You will be surprised to know that the brightness of this sky lightning is so high that it is visible even from a distance of 400 kilometers.

In fact, experts have been engaged for years to know about why there is so much lightning in this area. In the 1960s, it was believed that the amount of uranium in this area is high, so there is more lightning in the sky here.

In a research conducted by scientists, it was found that due to the abundance of methane in the oil fields near the lake, lightning flashes more in the sky. However, the theory of uranium and methane has not been proved authentically. Therefore this place still remains a mystery.
