The Hand Pump of Hope: A Desert Journey

Once, a man got lost in the desert. The little food and water he had with him quickly ran out, and for the past two days, he had been desperately craving every drop of water. He knew deep down that if he didn't find water within the next few hours, he was certain to die. But deep down, he believed in God that some miracle would happen and he would find water. Then, he saw a hut. He couldn't believe his eyes. He had been deceived by mirages and illusions before. But the poor man had no choice but to believe. After all, it was his last hope. He started walking towards the hut with all his remaining strength. As he got closer, his hope grew, and this time, luck was on his side. There was indeed a hut there. But what was it? The hut was deserted, as if no one had wandered there in years.  Still, hoping for water, the man entered the hut. Seeing the sight inside, he couldn't believe his eyes. There was a hand pump. He was filled with renewed energy. Craving for every drop of water, he began to operate the hand pump. But the pump had long since dried up. The man despaired, feeling nothing could save him from death. He collapsed, exhausted. Then he spotted a bottle full of water tied to the roof of the hut. He somehow managed to reach it and was about to open it and drink, when he noticed a piece of paper stuck to the bottle. It read, "Use this water to operate the hand pump and don't forget to refill the bottle." It was a strange situation. The man couldn't decide whether to drink the water or pour it into the hand pump to start it. All sorts of questions arose in his mind: why the pump wouldn't start even after pouring water into it.  What if what was written here was false? Who knows, maybe even the underground water had dried up. But who knows, maybe the pump will work, maybe what was written here is true. He couldn't understand what to do. After some thought, he opened the bottle and, with trembling hands, began pouring water into the pump. After pouring, he prayed to God and started the pump. One, two, three, and cold water started gushing out of the hand pump. The water was like nectar. The man drank to his heart's content, his life revived. His mind started working. He filled the bottle with water again and tied it to the ceiling. As he did so, he saw another glass bottle in front of him. Opening it, he found a pencil and a map, which showed the route out of the desert. The man memorized the route and put the bottle with the map back where it was. After that, he filled his bottles (which he already had) with water and started walking away.  He walked a little further, looked back. After some thought, he went back to the hut, peeled off the paper stuck on the water bottle, and began writing on it. He wrote, "Believe me, this hand pump works." This story is about life itself. It teaches us not to lose hope even in the worst of circumstances. It also teaches us that before achieving something truly significant, we must contribute something of our own. Just as the man poured all the water into the tap to turn it on. In this story, water represents the important things in life, things that hold special value in our eyes. For some, this message of mine may be knowledge, for others love, and for others money. To receive anything, we must first put our own karma into the hand pump, and then, in return, we receive far more than we contributed.
