Two young monks, traveling a long distance, arrived at a small village. They were extremely tired from their day's journey. It was evening, and they needed a holy family to rest for the night. They politely asked the villagers, "Brothers, is there any house here where we can rest for the night?"
The villagers replied, "There is an old man's house here. He serves saints and sages with great devotion. You should go there; he will surely accommodate you."
The two monks arrived at the indicated house. Upon seeing them, the old man bowed respectfully and invited them inside with great affection. He washed their feet, served them a simple but delicious meal, and even laid out a clean bed for them to rest. The old man's demeanor was extremely humble and full of service.
After dinner, a discussion began. One monk curiously asked, "Uncle, how many pilgrimage sites have you visited so far? How many times have you visited the four holy places?"
The old man smiled and said calmly, "Son, I haven't visited a single pilgrimage site yet. I stay here and remember God, and when saints like you visit, I feel privileged to serve them."
Hearing this, both monks became deeply disturbed. They thought, "We ate at the house of someone who hasn't visited a single pilgrimage site! This is unfair." Doubt and pride began to stir in their minds.
The night passed, but their minds remained unpeaceful. They tossed and turned. At midnight, their gaze suddenly fell on the courtyard. They saw a black cow come into the dung-smeared courtyard and begin rolling there. Surprisingly, as soon as it rolled and stood up, its body turned from black to white and it disappeared.
In a few moments, a second, a third, and then several more black cows arrived. Each cow rolled in the same manner, turning white and disappearing. The two monks were astonished by this amazing sight.
Finally, when a cow was leaving, they mustered courage, bowed to her, and asked, "O Mother Cow! What is this amazing secret? How do you become white after coming here?"
The cow replied in a sweet voice, "We are the embodiment of all pilgrimage sites. Humans bathe in our waters to wash away their sins, and the darkness of those sins becomes tainted upon us. To wash away that darkness, we come to the courtyards of saints who are enlightened and sincere. The elders of this house are such great men, whose purity purifies us again."
Hearing this, the ego of both monks was shattered. They deeply regretted their mistake. They understood that true pilgrimage does not reside outside, but in a pure heart and a spirit of service.
In the morning, they fell at the old man's feet and begged for forgiveness. The old man lovingly lifted them up and said, "Son, true devotion is not attained through external pilgrimages, but through a pure mind and service."
