Once a king asked his minister, "Can one attain God while living as a householder?"
The minister replied, "Yes, sir, it is possible."
The king asked, "How is this possible?"
The minister replied that a true answer to this question could be given by a Mahatma who lived in a dense forest near the Godavari River.
To find an answer to his question, the king took the minister with him the next day and set off to meet the Mahatma.
After walking some distance, the minister said, "Your Majesty, there is a rule that anyone who goes to meet the Mahatma must save insects along the way. If even one insect is crushed underfoot, the Mahatma curses them."
The king accepted the minister's advice and began placing his feet carefully, observing the ground ahead. Walking in this manner, they reached the Mahatma.
The Mahatma respectfully seated them both and asked the king, "Tell me what you saw on the way."
The king said, "Lord, I have been watching the insects on the road because of your curse. That's why my attention hasn't gone anywhere else; I don't know anything about the scenes on the road."
The Mahatma laughed and said, "O King, this is the answer to your question.
Just as you came here fearing my curse, you should fear God's punishment in the same way. You should walk while protecting insects and avoid evil deeds.
Despite the many scenes on the road, you should not see them. If you conduct your life with the same caution with which you came to me, you can attain God even while living a householder."
The king returned satisfied after getting the correct answer.
