A long time ago, there lived a poor potter named Madhav in a small village. Madhav was illiterate, had no mantras, or intricate rituals. But he held a call to his deity that was beyond words.
A Unique Rule
Madhav had a rule. Every day, he would make clay pots and in the evening, he would go and sit quietly on the temple steps. He would neither fold his hands nor close his eyes; he would simply gaze intently at the temple's sanctum sanctorum. The villagers would mock him, "Hey Madhav! Why don't you ask for anything? Why do you sit like a stone?"
Madhav would smile and say, "I see them, they see me. That's it, the matter is over."
When Pandit Ji Got Jealous
The temple's chief priest did not like Madhav's daily quiet sitting. He wondered, "What kind of devotion is this without chanting?" One day, the priest scolded Madhav, saying, "Don't come here from tomorrow! You're degrading the temple's dignity by sitting here. You don't even know the meaning of 'Om.'"
Madhav returned to his hut with a sad heart. He didn't go to the temple that night. He thought, "Perhaps my silence is disturbing God."
Visual Evidence of God
That very night, the temple priest had a dream. He saw that God himself had disappeared from the temple idol and the entire temple was plunged into darkness. The priest cried out in panic, "Lord, where have you gone?"
Then a resounding voice came:"Priest, I am in that hut where no mantras are being recited, where there is only the silence of love. You prevented my friend, in whose eyes I could see my reflection, from coming. Until he returns, I will not return to the stone idol."
The End of Ego
The next morning, the priest ran barefoot to Madhava's hut. He saw Madhava kneading his clay, tears flowing from his eyes. The priest fell at his feet and said, "Madhava, forgive me. Your silence is more powerful than my loud chants."
The Moral of the Story : -This story teaches us that God is not hungry for words; He is hungry for feeling. True prayer is not something that comes from the tongue, but something that is felt from the depths of the heart.
