A shepherd was traveling from one village to another with his goats and their kids. The path passed through a mountain forest. The sky had been overcast since noon, and before dusk, it began to pour down. The mountainous path, the heavy rain, and the raging storm—all combined to shake the shepherd's courage.
He panicked and wondered how he would spend the night. Just then, his eyes fell on a mountain cave. He hurriedly herded his goats to the cave entrance. When he looked inside, he was astonished—several wild sheep and their kids were already safely tucked inside.
At the sight of the fat sheep, he forgot his skinny goats. Greed took hold of his heart. He thought, "This is a golden opportunity. I will tame them overnight and take them to my village as soon as the rain stops. Then no one in the village will be greater than me."
He took the bundle of green grass he had gathered for his goats all day and entered the cave, leaving his goats outside to face the storm and rain. Attracted by the scent of the grass, the sheep gathered around him. The shepherd lovingly fed them grass, feeling contented.
Dawn came. The rain had stopped, the storm had calmed, and the sun's rays were beginning to spread across the earth. When the shepherd emerged from the cave, his heart trembled. Many of his goats had died from the overnight torment, and others were scattered.
He consoled himself—it doesn't matter if the goats are gone, the sheep are still there.
But then he noticed that instead of following him, the sheep started going in the other direction. He called out loudly, but they wouldn't come with him.
In a fit of rage, he shouted, "You bastards! I fed you grass for my goats all night, I sacrificed my pet goats for you, and now you're turning your back on me!"
Then the leader of the sheep stepped forward and said calmly, "We're not so foolish as to trust a dishonest person like you. How can someone who abandoned his own companions in danger due to selfishness and greed be our true kin? How can anyone trust someone who didn't stand by their own people? Look your own way."
The shepherd was stunned to hear this. He realized that in his greed to become a big man, he had lost everything. Now he had nothing left but regret.
