The Grateful Servant

In ancient times, a king owned a large fruit orchard. The orchard was filled with various kinds of fruit. The gardener of the orchard brought fresh fruit in baskets for the king every day.

One day, coconuts, guavas, and grapes ripened in the orchard. The servant began to ponder which fruit he should bring to the king that day. After much thought, he plucked the grapes and filled the basket. He took the basket to the king.

The servant took the basket of grapes and placed it before the king. The king was deeply worried about the problems facing his kingdom. The servant sat there, thinking. The king, while thinking, picked each grape from the basket, eating some and throwing others at the servant.

Each time, the king's thrown grapes hit the servant. But the servant always said, "God, you are very kind. Whatever happens, happens for the good."

After a while, the king's attention turned to the servant. He was saying, "God, you are very kind. Whatever happens, happens for the good."  Hearing this, the king asked the servant, "I've been throwing grapes at you repeatedly, yet you're not getting angry. And why are you calling God merciful?"

The servant replied, "King, today three fruits were ripe in our garden: coconut, guava, and grapes. I was wondering what I should bring for you today. Then I thought I should bring grapes. If I had brought coconut or guava, I would have been in a bad state. That's why I'm calling God merciful."

While bringing the fruit, God empowered me so that I brought grapes for you. That's why it's said that whatever happens, happens for good. People who worship selflessly have a calm mind and increased thinking and understanding.
