A clever man was very afraid of death. One day, he got clever and made death his friend. He said to his friend, "Friend, you spare no one; one day you will take me too."
Death said, "This is the world of death. Whoever comes here must die. This is the eternal law of creation, so I am helpless. But since you are my friend, I will make as many concessions as I can. Tell me clearly what you expect from me."
The man said, "Friend, I only ask that you write me a letter a few days before you come to take me to your world, so that I can explain all the business matters to my children thoroughly and devote myself to worshipping God."
Death said lovingly, "What's the big deal? I'll send you not one, but four letters. Don't worry. I'll leave you plenty of time between the four letters so you can be alert and complete your work."
The man was overjoyed, thinking, "From today on, the fear of death has vanished from my heart. If I complete all my tasks before I depart, even the gods will welcome me."
Days passed, and finally, the moment of death arrived. Death approached him with his messengers and said, "Friend, the time is up. Come with me. I will not leave you here for even a moment, truthfully and firmly obeying my master's command."
The man's forehead wrinkled, his eyebrows furrowed, and he said, "Shame on friends like you. Aren't you ashamed of betraying me?"
You promised me you would write a letter before coming to pick me up. I am deeply saddened that you suddenly came upon me with your messengers without any notice. Forget friendship, you didn't even keep your word.
Death laughed and said, "Friend, don't lie so much. You're proving me a liar right in front of me. I sent you not one but four letters. You haven't replied to a single one."
The man was startled and asked, "Which letters?" Do you have any proof? If you have a postal receipt for receiving this letter, please show it to me.
Death said, "Friend, don't worry. All four of my letters are with you right now."
My first letter climbed onto your head and spoke, grabbing your beautiful black hair, turning it white, and telling you to be careful and do whatever you want.
Leave the hassles of fame, fame, and wealth accumulation and concentrate on your devotional service, but my letter had no effect on you at all.
You dyed your hair black again with artificial dye and got lost in dreams of becoming young again. To this day, my white letters are written on your head.
A few days later, I sent a second letter to your eyes. Your vision began to dim.
Still, you tried to see the world through thick lenses. You didn't close your eyes to the world for even two minutes, meditating on the Lord, the embodiment of light.
Even then, you remained unwarranted, and I felt pity for your plight. As a friend, I sent a third letter.
This letter touched, shook, and broke your teeth.
You didn't even reply to this letter; instead, you got dentures and forcibly began savoring the material things of the world.
I was deeply saddened that I always think of his well-being, while he is always ready to adopt a new, artificial path.
In my final letter, I sent you illnesses, sufferings, and pain, but you, arrogant, ignored them all.
When the man understood the letters sent by death, he burst into tears and repented for his wrongdoings. He admitted that he had neglected to read these letters filled with good warnings.
I always thought that from tomorrow on, I would worship God. I would spend my earnings on good and auspicious causes, but that tomorrow did not come.
Death said, "Everything you have done till today has been for pleasure, selfishness, and pleasure." One who deliberately breaks the divine laws is unforgivable.
When the man didn't see his words working, he tempted Death with wealth worth crores.
Death laughed and said, "Friend, this is nothing more than dust to me. Wealth, fame, power—all these temptations can control worldly people, but not me."
The man asked, "Isn't there anything you also love that could tempt you? How is that possible?"
Death replied, "If you wanted to tempt me, you should have accumulated wealth from truth and good deeds. This is the kind of wealth that could compel me. I could be forced to reconsider my decision. But you don't have even a penny of this wealth."
All your money, property, and treasures will be left here. You will go with me naked, just like the soul of a beggar.
When death didn't listen to a single word the man said, he began to cry and wail.
He called out to all his relatives, but death took his life and continued on towards its destination.
What a profound statement Death made. The only unshakable truth is that we will die one day. How much wealth we will accumulate, how much fame we will achieve, what kind of children we will have—all this is uncertain, hidden in the womb of time.
But we will die one day—this is the only truth that is decided at birth. Death is an absolute truth. Death can knock at any time. We must prepare for it every day.
With time, seeing the signs of aging, we should at least practice remembering God. Now is the last time of Kaliyuga. In this time, everyone, whether young or old, must perform their actions while remembering God.
