Once upon a time, Maharishi Bhrigu decided to test the Trinity. When he reached Vaikuntha, Lord Vishnu was in Yognidra (spiritual sleep). Enraged, Bhrigu kicked him in the chest.
Instead of getting angry, Lord Vishnu pressed Maharishi Bhrigu's feet, but Goddess Lakshmi could not tolerate this insult. She left Vaikuntha and incarnated on earth as a daughter to the king of the Chola kingdom.
In separation from Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Vishnu also left Vaikuntha and came to earth and resided inside an anthill (Valmiki) in the hills of Seshachalam (Tirumala).
💐Contributions of Brahma and Shiva
Seeing Lord Vishnu's condition, Brahma and Mahadeva were moved. They assumed the form of a cow and a calf and sold them to the king of the Chola kingdom.
The cow used to graze daily in the hills of Seshachalam with the shepherds.
💐The Secret of Milk Feeding
While grazing, the cow would daily reach the same well where Lord Vishnu resided. Without telling anyone, she would pour all her milk into the well, which nourished the Lord.
This caused the palace to become depleted.
💐The Cowherd's Anger
Seeing the shortage of milk, the queen scolded the cowherd. The next day, the cowherd began chasing the cow.
When he saw the cow pouring milk into the well, he became furious. He thought the cow was wasting the milk.
Axe Blow
Infuriated, the cowherd struck the cow with an axe.
Lord Vishnu immediately emerged from the well to save the cow and took the blow on his head.
Blood began to flow from the Lord's head. Seeing this, the cowherd fell down in fear and remorse and died.
💐Curse and Blessing to the King
The frightened cow reached the king, covered in blood. The king followed him to the spot to find out the reason.
Lord Vishnu appeared and said, "Because of your servant's crime, you will be born as a demon."
The king humbly admitted his innocence and apologized.
The Lord's heart was moved. He granted a boon:"When I marry Padmavati, the daughter of King Akashraj, and she presents me with a crown, your curse will be lifted."
Nila Devi and the Tradition of Hair Donation
The axe blow left a scar on the Lord's forehead that would not heal.
One day, a mountain woman named Neela Devi saw the scar. Filled with compassion, she cut off her hair and covered the spot.
The Lord was deeply pleased with her sacrifice and granted a boon:"Any devotee who offers me their hair will attain virtue, prosperity, and salvation."
This is the beginning of the tradition of hair donation in Tirupati.
