The Golden Chariots: A Legendary Birth Story of King Dasharatha

Once, King Aja went for a walk in the forest and saw a beautiful lake. Within it was a beautiful lotus flower.

To obtain the lotus, King Aja went into the lake, but the closer he got, the further away he would get, and King Aja was unable to catch it.

Finally, a voice from the sky said, "O King, you are childless and unworthy of this lotus." This prophecy struck King Aja with a terrible blow to his heart.

King Aja returned to his palace and was filled with worry because he had no children, despite being a great devotee of Lord Shiva.

Lord Shiva took note of his concern and summoned Dharmaraja and instructed him to send a Brahmin to Ayodhya, so that King Aja might have a child.

Far away, a poor Brahmin and his wife lived in a hut on the banks of the Saryu River.

One day, the Brahmin went to King Aja's court and begged for alms, describing his plight.

King Aja offered him gold coins from his treasury, but the Brahmin refused, saying, "These belong to the people, so you can give whatever you have." King Aja took off his necklace and offered it to the Brahmin, but the Brahmin refused, saying, "This too belongs to the people."

King Aja was deeply saddened that a poor Brahmin was leaving his court empty-handed. That evening, King Aja disguised himself as a laborer and set out for some work in the city.

On his way, he reached a blacksmith's shop and, without revealing his identity, began working. He worked with a hammer all night, earning a rupee in return.

The king took one rupee and went to the Brahmin's house, but the Brahmin was not there. He gave the rupee to the Brahmin's wife and told her to give it to the Brahmin.

When the Brahmin arrived, the Brahmin's wife gave him the coin, and the Brahmin threw it on the ground. A surprising incident occurred. A pit formed where the Brahmin had thrown it. The Brahmin dug further, and a golden chariot emerged from it, which soared into the sky.

The Brahmin dug further, and another golden chariot emerged, which soared into the sky. Similarly, nine golden chariots emerged, each carrying a child. The tenth chariot was mounted on it, and then it landed on the ground.

The Brahmin took the child to King Aja's court and said, "O King, please accept this son. This is your son, born from a single coin."

Nine golden chariots emerged along with it, which soared into the sky, while the child emerged on the tenth chariot. Therefore, this chariot and son are yours. Thus, Dasharatha was born!

King Dasharatha's real name was Manu, and he was famous for his ability to drive his chariot in all ten directions.
