A small businessman borrowed money from a moneylender but failed to return it on time. The moneylender was old and ugly, but he had an eye for the merchant's beautiful, young daughter.
The moneylender told the merchant that if he married his daughter to him, he would forget the entire loan, including interest.
The merchant and his daughter were upset by the moneylender's deal.
The moneylender said to the merchant, "The condition is that I will place a white and a black pebble in an empty bag. Your daughter will take out one pebble from the bag without looking. If she takes out the black pebble, she will have to marry me, and your entire debt will be forgiven.
If she takes out the white pebble, she will not have to marry me, and your debt will be forgiven. But if your daughter refuses to take out the pebble from the bag, I will send you to jail for non-payment."
At this time, the moneylender, the merchant, and his daughter were standing on a path in the merchant's garden, strewn with white and black gravel. As per the condition, the moneylender bent down and picked up two pebbles from the gravel and placed them in an empty bag.
While the moneylender was picking up the pebbles, the merchant's daughter noticed with her keen eyes that the dishonest moneylender had picked up two black pebbles from the gravel and put them in the bag. The moneylender then asked the girl to take one pebble from the bag.
If you were in that girl's place, what would you have done???
Or if you were asked to give the girl sound advice, what advice would you have given?
If you carefully consider, there are three possibilities:
1. The girl refuses to take out the pebbles.
2. The girl says that the moneylender has been dishonest and put both black pebbles in the bag.
3. A girl compromises her life by taking out a black pebble and saves her father from debt and prison.
This story depicts a strange battle between good and evil, the mind and the heart, the inevitable.
The girl reached into her bag and took out a pebble. Without looking, she threw it into the gravel. The pebble was lost in the black and white gravel, making it impossible to identify which pebble the girl had thrown.
The moneylender was aware of his dishonesty: only the black pebble remained in the bag, but he refused to admit his dishonesty.
The girl then said, "Oh, sorry! The pebble accidentally fell down.
There were two pebbles, white and black. It's okay, there's still one pebble in the bag. You can tell which color pebble I took out of the bag by looking at it. If there's a black pebble left, it means I took out the white pebble."
The moneylender's plan failed, he was disappointed, his face fell. With her intelligence, the girl turned a seemingly impossible situation in her favor.
Solutions to problems are possible, what is needed is to change the perspective about them, to think from a different perspective, in a different way.
