There was a saint. His devotion was so intense that he would become so engrossed in his own devotion that he would lose consciousness. His mannerisms and gait were so ecstatic that wherever he went, crowds of onlookers would gather. People flocked to see him. His face was clearly radiant. The saint would wake up at four in the morning and go for a walk, chanting God's name. One day, as usual, he was walking, swaying and dancing, immersed in his joy. On the way, he saw an angel holding a diary. The saint stopped him and asked, "What are you doing here, and what is in this diary?" The angel replied, "It contains the names of people who remember God." Hearing this, the saint was curious to see if his name was there. He asked, "Is my name in this diary?" The angel said, "You should see for yourself," and handed the diary to the saint. The saint opened the diary and found his name missing. The saint smiled slightly at this and then walked away, remembering God in his ecstatic mood.
The next day, the same angels appeared again. This time, the saint paid no attention and continued walking in his ecstatic gait. The angel then said, "Won't you see the diary today?" The saint smiled and said, "Show me your name." As soon as he opened the diary, he saw the saint's name at the top.
The saint laughed and said, "Does God have two diaries? There wasn't one yesterday, and today it's at the top." The angel replied, "The diary you saw yesterday was for those who love God. Today, the diary contains the names of those whom God himself loves."
On hearing this, the saint burst into tears and lay there with his head bowed for hours. While crying, he kept saying, "Oh God, if I had objected to you even slightly yesterday, my name would have been missing." You will reward me, the unfortunate one, so greatly for my little patience. You are truly merciful. There is no one who loves you more than I do, and I continue to cry again and again.
Stay steadfast in your devotion to God until the end. Be patient, because when the time for God's mercy arrives, your mind will become restless, but you must remain firm, so that the great Lord may bless us too.
