A young man said to a saint, "Sir, I want to reach the highest peak in life, but I don't want to start from the lowest level.
Can you show me a path that will take me directly to the highest peak?" The saint said, "Of course I will. First, bring me the most beautiful rose from the ashram garden.
But there's one condition: You won't pluck the rose you leave behind." Fulfilling this simple condition, the young man went to the standard garden. There were beautiful roses blooming there.
Whenever he moved forward to pluck a rose, he would see an even more beautiful rose a little distance away, and he would leave it behind and move on.
In doing so, he reached the entrance of the garden. But the flowers he saw there were completely wilted.
Finally, he returned without a flower.
Seeing him empty-handed, the saint asked, "What happened, son? Didn't you bring a rose?" The young man said, "Baba, I kept moving forward, leaving behind the beautiful and fresh flowers of Durga, but in the end, only the withered flowers were left.
You had forbidden me to turn back and pluck the flowers. That is why I could not pluck the fresh and beautiful rose flowers."
The saint smiled and said, "Life is also like this. In it, one must keep working from the very beginning.
Many times, goodness and success are hidden in the very first actions and opportunities.
Those who keep moving forward with great effort for the greater and the highest, in the end, have to return empty-handed." The young man understood his meaning.
