The Stark Bird and the Foolish Old Lady

Except for humans, all animals and birds have a periodic sexual system. They experience sexual arousal during a specific season; they do not experience it throughout the rest of the year. Man is the only animal that experiences sexual arousal year-round. This sexual arousal is mental. If a human were natural, he would also experience sexual arousal at a certain time, but would be absent the rest of the time. But man has superimposed a mental system on top of all natural systems. He has created his own separate system over everything. This separate system is a distortion of our lives and our insanity. You don't realize whether the sexual desire that has awakened in you is natural, biological, or psychological. You don't realize it because you haven't even understood biological sexual desire. Before it awakens, mental sexual desire awakens. Small children, who will become biologically mature at the age of fourteen, will be capable of sexual desire in the biological sense, but they are already capable and competent of mental desire long before the age of fourteen.

I heard that an old woman took her grandchildren to a museum. There's a European story about a bird called the Stark, a bird used to teach children that when babies are born, the elders ask the elders where they came from. The elders say, "This Stark bird brought them." The old woman went to the Stark bird in the museum. The children asked, "Which bird is this?" The old woman replied, "It's the same bird that brings babies." They were small children. They looked at each other and laughed, and one child said to his neighbor, "Should we tell this foolish old lady the real secret? May we tell her the real secret, this poor old lady. She still doesn't know, she's just thinking that babies come from the Stark bird."

The air and the atmosphere around us awaken a mental desire in the minds of very young children. This desire then dominates them and follows them throughout their lives.  And they will never realize that the biological urge, the biological desire, never arose, or when it arose, they were unaware of it. And then a strange phenomenon will occur, and that strange phenomenon is that they will never be satisfied. Because mental lust can never be satisfied; that which is not real cannot be satisfied. Real hunger can be satisfied, but false hunger cannot. Therefore, desires can be satisfied, but the desires we cultivate, the desires we ourselves have created, can never be satisfied.

That is why animals and birds also live in desires, but they are not as stressed as we are. No tension is visible in them. Look into the eyes of a cow; she has not attained detachment, she has not become a sage, a Tirthankar, but her eyes have the same simplicity as those of a Tirthankar. What is the matter? She is living in desire.  Yet, his lust is natural. Natural lust does not cause stress. Natural lust may not take you higher, but it also does not bring you down. To go higher, one must rise above natural lust. But to fall lower, one must establish unnatural lust above natural lust.
