The Thief and the Saint

There was a thief living in a village.Once, he didn't get a chance to steal for several days, leaving him without food.So desperate, he entered a monk's hut outside the village at about midnight.

He knew the monk was a great renunciate and kept nothing. However, he thought, "If I get something to eat and drink, I'll be able to survive for a day or two."

While the thieves were entering the hut, coincidentally, the monk Baba got up from meditation and went out to urinate.

They encountered the thief. The monk recognized him, having seen him many times before, but he didn't know he was a thief.

He was surprised why he had come here at midnight!

The monk asked lovingly: "Tell me, child! How did you suffer at midnight? Do you have any work?"

The thief said: "Your Majesty! I've been hungry all day."

Sadhu: "Okay, come and sit. I put some sweet potatoes in the fire last evening; they must have been roasted. I'll take them out. You'll be full.

If you had come in the evening, we would have eaten whatever was there together. What's the point of a stomach, son? If the mind is content, one can be happy with whatever one gets. This is what 'Yatha Labh Santosh' is all about."

The Sadhu lit a lamp. Gave the thief a seat to sit, water, and placed the roasted sweet potatoes on a leaf.

Then, sitting nearby, he fed him like a mother feeds her child.

The thief was delighted by Sadhu Baba's kindness and thought, "There is one me and there is this Baba.

I came to steal, and he is feeding me with so much love! He is human, and so am I.

It's also true: there is a difference between man and man; some are diamonds, some are pebbles. In front of him, I am worse than a pebble."

Along with bad tendencies, a person also possesses good tendencies, which awaken when the time comes.

Just as a seed grows with proper fertilizer and water, similarly, a person's good tendencies flourish with the company of a saint.

All the bad habits in the thief's mind vanished. He benefited from the saint's darshan, proximity, and nectar-like vision.

One hour, half an hour, half of half again.

Tulsi, the company of a saint, removes a million sins.

The thief's many bad habits were destroyed by the half-hour association with that devoted saint.

His mind became eager to confess his crime before the saint.

Then he thought, 'If the saint Baba finds out that I had come with the intention of stealing, what respect will I have in his eyes?'

What will Baba think, what kind of fallen person am I, who came to steal from me, the saint!'

But then I thought, 'Whatever the saint may think, I will confess my crime before him and atone for it.

He is such a kind and noble man; he will surely forgive my crime.' Repenting before a saint burns all sins to ashes.

After he finished his meal, the saint said: "Son! Where will you go at this time of night? I have a mat. Take it and sleep comfortably here. You can leave in the morning."

The thief was overwhelmed by the kindness. He fell at the saint's feet and burst into tears.

The saint couldn't understand what had happened! The saint lovingly lifted him up, caressed his head, and asked: "Son! What happened?"

The thief's throat choked with tears. With great difficulty, he composed himself and said:"Your Majesty! I am a great criminal."

The sage said: "Son! God forgives all sins. By surrendering to Him, He forgives even the gravest of crimes. You should surrender to Him."

Thief: "Your Majesty! A sinner like me cannot be saved."

The sage: "You fool! God has said: If even the most wicked person becomes my devotee and worships me with unwavering devotion, he is worthy of being considered a saint."

"No, Your Majesty! I have committed many thefts. Today, driven by hunger, I came to you to steal, but your kindness has transformed my life.

Today, I swear before you that I will never steal again, nor will I harass any living being.

Please take me under your protection and make me your disciple."

The magic of the sage's love transformed the thief into a saint.

He dedicated his entire life at the sage's feet, forever, and put his precious human life on the path to attaining the most precious God.

Great men teach that you should treat everyone like your own self, because pure, selfless love is the true nourishment for a happy life.

The world is starving for it, so share it. Don't keep the spiritual love within you.

Share it generously, and much of the world's suffering will be alleviated.
