Seeking God's Grace

Is God waiting for a cheap deal for us? We all spend day and night asking God for things. Some of our wishes are fulfilled, while others remain unfulfilled. We are so greedy that we go to the temple with a 1 kg box of sweets and ask for 1 lakh rupees.

But saints and great men have taught us what to ask God for.

In Shri Ram Charit Manas, Tulsidas tells the story of Narada, who once went to

Vishnu to ask for his form, but Narada said to God, "O Lord! Whatever is good for me, please do it quickly."

Just ask God for whatever is good for your servant.

If we don't desire worldly things, then ask only this, O Lord:*I repeatedly ask for your boon, and with joy, give me the grace of the Lord.*

*May the lotus feet of the Lord be filled with unwavering devotion and the company of your devotees.*

I repeatedly ask you for this boon: may I always have unwavering devotion to your lotus feet and the company of your devotees. O Lord of Lakshmi, please grant me this.

We can also ask God for His grace, because everything comes with God's grace. The word grace is small, but it is profound.

And most importantly, why ask God for anything else? Why not ask God for God Himself? Because when God becomes ours, what will remain? May His love and grace continue to shower upon us.

The truth is that we don't know how to ask, because if we ask God for anything, we make a loss. Suppose you asked God for one lakh rupees, and God wanted to give us one crore rupees?

It's a loss-making deal, isn't it? Just look at Sudama ji for a bit. Take a look at his life. You'll understand everything. Here's another short story:

*A Beautiful Incident of God's Grace*

Once upon a time, a king went out into the city for a walk. On the way, a button on his kurta broke. He told his soldiers to go and get a tailor.

The soldiers went and brought the tailor. The tailor fixed the button on the kurta.

The king then asks, "How much does it cost?"

He thought, "I only have the thread. The kurta and the button belong to the king. What should I ask for?"

He replied, "Your Majesty, I don't want the price."

The king then said, "You should take something. Tell me how much it cost?"

The tailor now thinks, "If I take one rupee from the king, it will be fine." Then he thinks, "No, no, if I take one rupee from the king, the king will think I take one rupee from everyone."  And at that time, one rupee was a lot.

He said to the king, "King! You can give whatever you wish." The king thought it was a matter of prestige. He donated 10 gold coins to the tailor.

Now think, one rupee is one and ten gold coins are two. So, have faith in God. Whatever He gives us will be good.
