Long ago, there was a quiet pond where two true friends—a crocodile and a tortoise—lived. Nearby was a clever jackal, who would drink from a distance, avoiding the crocodile.
Over time, the crocodile ate all the fish in the pond. Now the pond was empty, and the crocodile was starving. He said to the tortoise, "If I can somehow find the jackal, I can save myself."
Keeping his friendship intact, the tortoise devised a plan.
He said to the crocodile, "Pretend to be dead, and I'll bring the jackal to you."
The crocodile lay down, completely still, at the water's edge.
Just then, by chance, the jackal arrived. The tortoise pretended to cry and said, "My friend, the crocodile, is dead... Let's perform his last rites."
The jackal was overjoyed, but he was clever.
He thought, "If he's really dead, why isn't his tail moving?"
He said this loudly.
The crocodile got scared and immediately started wagging its tail.
And that was it...
This became his biggest mistake!
The jackal shouted, "Hey! It's alive... They're trying to trap me!"
He ran away and never returned.
The tortoise said angrily, "You fool! I laid the trap with great skill, but you ruined it all by wagging your own tail."
The crocodile was left remorseful—he remained hungry and lost his prey.
