The Two Bundles: A Parable of Self-Improvement

When God created man, he gave him two bundles. While giving the bundles, God told man to place one bundle in front and the other on the back of his shoulder, advising him not to change their positions.

Although man was excited to go to Earth, he also felt a little intimidated by the unknown life there and did not want to leave God. So, God reassured him, telling him to remember and follow His words and to be grateful in every situation. Man said goodbye to God and did as He said.

God placed man's own shortcomings in one bundle and instructed him to place it in the front, and placed the shortcomings of other people in the world in another bundle and instructed him to place it in the back.

Man placed the bundle of his own shortcomings in the front and the bundle of others' shortcomings in the back.

God also told man to focus on the bundle in front of him, not the bundle behind him.

Time passed. Because man's own bundle of shortcomings was at the front, every effort was directed toward improving himself, and he continued to progress.

One day, after bathing in the pond, when the man picked up the bundles, they exchanged places. The bundle of others' shortcomings came to the front, while his own bundle of shortcomings hung behind.

Now man began to notice the shortcomings of others. Initially, he paused once or twice and wondered if something was different, something had changed. But when he looked around, everything looked the same. And since he had been on Earth for quite some time, he was filled with confidence and began to believe that he knew the ways of the world. So he ignored his inner voice and continued on.

Now he constantly thought...this isn't right, that isn't right...his neighbor is useless...the government is incompetent...etc. He began to find fault with everyone except himself.

The result was that no one improved. Everyone began to decline. Nothing much had changed on the outside, but deep inside, he couldn't be happy at all. The man became distraught! He couldn't understand what had happened. Why wasn't he progressing, and why wasn't he as happy as before?

Then, feeling completely helpless and unable to see a solution, he remembered God.

He went back to God and asked, "You gave me two bundles. I kept them as you instructed. And everything was going well for me. I was on the path to improvement and progress. But suddenly, everything started to deteriorate. Now, nothing is going right. There's no improvement anywhere. Why is this?"

God explained to humanity, "As long as you had your own set of shortcomings, you continued to see them and improve them, and progress. But when you were faced with the set of shortcomings of others, you began to see only those of others and stopped improving yourself. This is why everything went wrong. Your downfall began."

The reality is this: we cannot improve anyone, we cannot control anyone. We can only use all our energy to improve ourselves, progress, and be happy. This is our well-being. If we improve, the world will improve. We think that peace will come from improving others, and so we don't improve ourselves.

♾️"We cannot change the world. But when we change, the world will change."
