The Forgotten Cane

A boy went to his old grandfather and asked,"Grandpa, can you tell me a story with a moral?"

The old grandfather thought for a moment, then cleared his throat and asked him to sit down and listen to the story.

"There was a blind girl named Sara. Her parents were killed in the same car accident that left the little girl blind.

Her grandmother took her to the village and raised her. Sara had no friends. Her only companion was her cane; it helped her immensely.

It helped her get around and change places without depending on anyone.

No matter what, it never disappointed her or intentionally hurt her feelings. Her cane always made her smile.

Later, a rich, handsome man fell in love with Sara and decided to marry her. He took her to one of the best hospitals in the country to restore her sight. Fortunately, the surgery was successful, and Sara began to see again..." End of Story

As the old grandfather paused, the boy whispered, a little confused, "But there's no moral in the story, Grandfather. There's nothing to learn from it."

The old grandfather said,"Son, let me tell you something.  As soon as the storm returned to Sarah's sight, she threw something. Do you know what she threw, son?

The boy thought for a moment, then shook his head and muttered,"I don't know... you tell me."

The old grandfather smiled and said,"She threw her stick. The stick that had helped her all her life. Her only companion. Just because she got her sight back, she forgot who stood by her and helped her when no one else was there. She forgot everything the stick had done for her."

At that moment, the old grandfather patted the boy on the shoulder, sighed, and continued,

"Listen, son... life is like that. The harsh truth is that when people are no longer useful, we stop remembering them. The most common mistake we make is forgetting those who stood by us and were there for us when we were in the worst times of our lives."  Their work and sacrifices are remarkable, but we certainly miss the opportunity to repay them. We forget the sacrifices of our parents, even our siblings, friends, and those who have helped us in the past.
