This story is about a businessman who lived and worked in his home country. His business was doing well, but he had a desire—to go abroad and earn more money. When he told his family about this, his father said, "Son, get married first, then do whatever you want." Obeying his family, he got married.
A few months after the wedding, he told his father, "Now I want to go abroad and expand my business there." His wife was pregnant at the time. She told her husband, "Do whatever you think is right, but remember, our lives will be incomplete without you."
The businessman said goodbye to everyone and went abroad. There, he worked hard, and his business gradually flourished. He remained abroad for 16-17 years. He regularly sent money home and kept in touch with his family through letters.
As time passed, his wealth increased, but the desire to return home also grew. One day he thought, "I've earned enough, now I should return home." He bought an air ticket and set off.
The journey was long. A day passed on the plane. The next day, he saw an old man sitting next to him, his face deeply sad. The merchant asked, "Why are you so sad?"
The old man said, "I came to this country to sell my knowledge, but I haven't found a buyer."
The merchant thought that perhaps God had sent him to impart knowledge. He said, "I want to buy your knowledge. Tell me, how much do you want?"
The old man smiled and said, "I need 500 gold coins." The merchant thought it was too much, but he paid it out of respect. The old man said, "Listen, son—think for two minutes before you do anything. This is my knowledge."
The merchant thought, "For so much money, I only got one sentence!" But he resolved that perhaps its meaning would be understood later.
The journey ended. After many years, the merchant returned to his country. It was nighttime. He thought his wife would be surprised to see him suddenly. He quietly approached the house. The guards recognized him and let him in.
He sneaked into his room and saw—his wife was sleeping on the bed, and a young man was sleeping beside her. The sight of this infuriated him.
He thought, "I've been working hard for so many years, sending money, and she's betraying me!" He went out, picked up his sword, and returned. Just as he was about to strike, he remembered the wisdom—"Think for two minutes before you do anything."
He put down his sword and stood there, angrily. The sword struck the ground, and the vessel made a sound. The sound woke his wife. She looked at her husband, tears welling in her eyes.
She said, "You've returned... after so many years..." The merchant was still angry. He said, "First, tell me who this boy is?"
The wife said softly, "Son, touch your father's feet. Look, your father has returned."
The boy stepped forward and bent down to touch his father's feet. His turban fell off and his long hair scattered. The merchant was stunned.
The wife said, "This is your daughter. When she was born after you left, I raised her as a son out of fear of society so that no one would dare to tarnish our honor."
The merchant's eyes welled with tears. He realized that a single mistake could have ruined his entire life. Now he realized that the wisdom the old man had imparted for 500 gold coins was invaluable.
He said, "Now I understand the meaning of 'think for two minutes.' If I hadn't thought for those two minutes, I would have murdered my own daughter and wife."
