The Mischievous Monkey and the Greedy Snake

In a dense forest, a monkey used to jump from tree to tree. He was very naughty and mischievous. One day he was swinging on a branch when he looked down. A snake was coming out of a hole under the tree. This snake had come out in search of prey.

The monkey thought of playing a prank. He hung upside down holding the branch with his tail and said laughingly –“What happened brother, did you not find any prey today?”

The snake raised its hood in anger. He was hungry and on top of that the monkey was making fun of him. He said –“You come down, you will not be able to escape my poison.”

The monkey laughed loudly showing his teeth –“Hey brother, I was talking about your benefit. Come on, you find a mouse for yourself, I am leaving.”

Greed arose in the snake’s mind. He said –“No brother, tell me what plan do you have in mind?”

The monkey said cleverly –“Brother, how long will you keep looking for prey? If you listen to me, I will tell you such a way that you can drink milk every day without going anywhere.”

The snake got lost in thought. He liked this idea very much. He asked the monkey to explain in detail. Then the monkey said –“Look, I will spread a rumor in the forest that the snake has a Nagamani. Whoever makes him happy will place the Nagamani on his head and his age will increase. I will bring a shining piece of glass, which you show to everyone from a distance. Then you ask for milk from the animals and fruits for me.”

The snake got greedy and agreed to the plan. The next day the monkey brings a shining piece of glass and gives it to the snake and spreads this news in the entire forest. Now both of them had a great time. The animals of the forest started flattering him by bringing different kinds of fruits and milk.

Everything went well for a few days, but gradually the snake became arrogant. He would put the gem on the head of small animals and increase their confidence. But when big animals like elephant and lion approached him, he avoided them.

One day the lion said to the elephant –“Brother, I am getting old and cannot hunt. I went to the snake, but he refused me.”

The elephant also complained –“He chased me away too. We have to snatch that gem from him.”

Both of them made a plan. The elephant said –“We will keep the milk pot near his hole. When he comes out, I will crush his head with my foot.”

The next day they did the same. The elephant called out –“Brother snake, I have brought fresh milk for you.”

The snake came out happily. But he saw the elephant’s shadow in the sunlight and immediately moved aside. He said in panic –“Why are you killing me?”

Then the lion roared –“You have become very proud. Now we will kill you and take your gem.”

The snake got scared and fell at the lion’s feet. He said –“Maharaj, please forgive me. This is not a Nagamani, just a piece of glass. This was all a trick of the monkey. He fooled me.”

The elephant caught the monkey in anger. The monkey started trembling with fear. He pleaded to the snake –“Brother, bite the elephant quickly so that I can escape.”

The snake took a deep breath and said –“First of all it will crush me. Why should I get trapped?” And he moved aside.

Now the monkey realized his mistake. He folded his hands and said –“Elephant brother, lion maharaj, please forgive me. I will never cheat you like this again.”

The lion roared –“Listen monkey! Today I am leaving you. But if I see you in this forest again, I will kill you.”

The elephant let him go. The monkey ran away to save his life and muttered –“The snake left me very quickly. I have no one of my own in this jungle. Now I am going to the city.”

👉 In this way, the game of greed and deceit finally became a problem for both the monkey and the snake.
