It was a long time ago. A big crocodile lived in a deep and wide river. He was very clever and cunning by nature. Initially, he used to catch and eat the fishes in the river. But gradually when the number of fishes started decreasing, a bad idea came to his mind – why not hunt humans.
One day a man was bathing in the river. Seeing the opportunity, the crocodile attacked him and killed him by pulling him inside the water. The crocodile got food for many days. This news spread in the nearby villages. People got scared and stopped going near the river. The crocodile was not getting new prey, due to which his mind became restless.
One day when he was roaming around in the water, he saw a bundle in the water. He picked up the bundle with his mouth out of curiosity and looked inside. There were shining gold coins inside the bundle. A cunning plan came to the crocodile's mind. He put the bundle on his back and started swimming on the surface of the river.
It was afternoon, when the rays of the sun fell on the coins in the bundle, they started shining. One of the farmers working in the fields noticed the shine. He moved towards the river in greed. From a distance, he could only see the bundle, but could not see the crocodile hidden under the bundle. As soon as the farmer reached near the water, the crocodile caught his leg and pulled him into the water and ate him.
Now this became the crocodile's daily routine. Every day he would swim with the bundle of coins on the river bank. Greedy and simple villagers would enter the river in greed for gold and become the crocodile's prey. The news of these mysterious deaths spread from village to village. People would wonder from where the crocodile suddenly comes and catches people, but no one knew the real reason.
Finally the villagers called a panchayat. It was decided that some young men would guard the river bank so that no one goes there. The young men stood guard. Seeing this, the crocodile hid his bundle under a big stone and went away from there for a few days. When no one died for a long time, people thought that the crocodile had left the river. Gradually, the guards also became careless and people started getting busy with work as before.
After two months, people suddenly started disappearing again. Fear and panic spread in the entire area. Troubled, the villagers went to the collector sahab and told him everything. The collector called two experienced hunters from the city and hid them on the river bank.
The hunters kept watch for many days. The crocodile was not seen. Then they made a plan that two farmers should keep roaming like this on the river bank. The hunters kept watching them by hiding. One day suddenly the crocodile was again seen floating on the water with a bundle. The shine of the coins revealed the whole truth.
The hunters took aim at the crocodile from hiding and fired bullets. The crocodile fell down right there. A wave of happiness ran through the entire village. The collector sahab heaved a sigh of relief and gave the bundle of gold to the hunters as a reward.
This way the cunning crocodile came to an end and the villagers again started going to the river bank fearlessly.
