A Story of Duty and Love

Once upon a time, there was a businessman who had a big business of boats. Many of his boats were rented out to different people. But he had bought a special boat for his family and children. Summer holidays were about to come and his children were very excited that this time they would do a lot of boating.

The businessman saw that the condition of the boat of the family had deteriorated. The color had faded and the boat was starting to look old. He thought that since the children's holidays are starting, the boat should be given a new look. He called a painter and said -"Bhaiya, paint this boat well. It is for the children, so make it beautiful and shiny. Their holidays should be memorable."

The painter was a very smart and honest man. He asked -"Sir, please tell me the names of the children. I want to write their names on the boat as well."

The businessman told the names of both his children.  The painter wrote the name of the elder son on one side and the name of the younger son on the other in beautiful letters. The boat was decorated with new colours in such a way that it started looking brand new.

When the painting work was about to be completed, the painter noticed a small hole in the bottom of the boat. He understood that this hole was very dangerous. If it was ignored, the boat could sink anytime. The painter also knew a little about repairs. Without telling the merchant, he quietly repaired the hole and made the boat completely safe.

The painting work was over. The merchant paid the painter and thanked him. The painter did not even mention repairing the hole and quietly returned to his village.

After three months, suddenly an envelope came to the painter by post. It contained a big cheque – of a very large amount. The painter was shocked. He thought –

“Oh! I had taken the full payment for the painting that day. Then why was this huge amount sent?”

The very next day he reached the businessman's house and said -"Sir, why was this cheque sent to me? I had only painted and had taken the money for it."

The businessman smiled and said -"Brother, I had paid the wages for the painting on the same day. But this cheque is for that work, whose value cannot be measured in money. Come, sit, listen while drinking tea."

Then he slowly explained –“When the children's holidays started, one morning they went for a boat ride. About half an hour later, I suddenly remembered that there was a hole in that boat. The ground slipped under my feet. When I told my wife, she also started crying. We both were in shock. It seemed that now the children's lives would not be saved.

But after some time, both the children came back laughing and playing. They were happily telling me how much fun they had in the boat. I ran to see the boat and found that the hole had been completely closed. Then I understood that along with painting, you had also repaired it. If that hole had remained open, both my children would probably not have been alive today.

Brother, you did three great things.

First - you did your real work honestly.

Second - you repaired it selflessly, without telling anyone.

And third - you saved my children's lives.

Believe me, no money in the world can pay the price of your work. This cheque is just a small gratitude.”

The painter said politely –“Sir, I had only done my duty. I felt that there was some problem with the boat, so it was necessary to fix it. What is the big deal in this?”

The merchant looked into his eyes and said –“You think this is a small thing, but for me this is the biggest favor. Because my children are more precious than my life. By saving them, you have given the biggest gift of life to my entire family.”

Essence of the story : -

From this small incident, we learn that we should always keep doing good deeds from our side. Sometimes our small efforts can change someone's entire life. Do good deeds selflessly, God will reward it in his own way.

And remember, if someone remembers you only in times of need, then do not feel bad. It means that in the darkness, you are the light that can show him the way. This is the real religion of man – to do good deeds and bring light in the lives of others.
