From Sea to Shore: The Legacy of Homo Erectus in the Sundaland Region

Research is being done continuously to know the mysteries of the world. Now in the meantime, scientists have taken out more than 6 thousand fossils from the sea floor near Java Island of Indonesia. Bones of extinct human ancestor Homo erectus have been found in them. This discovery reveals an unknown population of Homo erectus in Southeast Asia. This population was probably mixed with modern humans. Fossils have been found for the first time in the submerged parts of the Indonesian archipelago.

About 1,40,000 years ago, the sea level was low, so during that time islands like Java were connected to the Asian mainland. This area was called Sundaland. It was full of vast plains and rivers. New fossils have revealed that there were fishes, turtles, river sharks, hippos and other marine creatures in these rivers. Let us know its full story...

The plains were inhabited by large animals such as elephants, stegodons (elephant-like creatures) and buffalos.  Homo erectus hunted in this fertile region, particularly in the submerged sea area between the islands of Java and Madura, now known as the Madura Strait.

Scientists have found cut marks on some fossils. These suggest that Madura Strait hominins (humans and their closest relatives) hunted turtles and large animals, the oldest evidence of turtle hunting in Southeast Asia. The fossils show that these hominins hunted animals such as cows. This was not common among Homo erectus in Indonesia. It was a strategy of modern humans living on the Asian mainland. This suggests that Homo erectus may have learned this strategy from other human species.

What is the story of Homo erectus : - Homo erectus is a very important part of the human evolutionary journey. This species appeared 2 million years ago and was the first species with a human-like body structure to leave Africa and reach Southeast Asia. Other ancient humans such as Denisovans and Neanderthals also came to this area, but it is not known how much interaction there was between them.

According to reports, Homo erectus survived in Java from 1,17,000 to 1,08,000 years ago and then became extinct. Our species Homo sapiens reached Southeast Asia about 77,000 years ago.
