Quality

Acharya Chanakya used to answer very thoughtfully. One day King Chandragupta Maurya, General Secretary Chanakya and Maharani were talking on some subject.

While talking, King Chandragupta said to Chanakya, 'Your complexion is black, you look ugly from a distance, but you are very talented.  It would have been great if you were handsome too. How did God make a mistake?

'The Queen did not like this, then she said, 'King, this form on which everyone is fascinated, it is momentary. It has no taste.

'The king said, 'You yourself are so beautiful and are not giving importance to appearance. Give an example in which the importance of qualities is seen more than form.

'Chanakya replied to this. He said to the king, 'Take water and drink it. Chanakya filled two glasses and gave water to the king. Chanakya said, 'The first glass I gave you was filled from a beautiful pot of gold. The second glass was filled from a black earthen pot.  Tell me which water do you like the most?

'Said the king, 'the taste of water from an earthen pot is better. Chanakya said, 'Satisfaction came from the water of an earthen pot.  Similarly, the form is like a pot of gold and the qualities are like a pot of clay. Satisfaction is achieved by virtue and form remains fuzzy.'

Learning - This talk of Chanakya is of great use to us even today. Never criticize anyone. If someone is very beautiful then do not get too impressed by him and if someone is not beautiful in appearance then do not run away from him. First of all, one should look at the qualities of the people.
