Pulitzer Prize

The Pulitzer Prize is considered to be the biggest award in the field of journalism. This award was first given in the year 1917. It is also considered the most prestigious award in journalism.

The Pulitzer Prize is an award for achievements in newspaper, magazine and online journalism, literature, and music composition in the United States. It was established in 1917 by provisions of the will of American (Hungarian-born) Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher. The Pulitzer Prize was awarded on 4 June 1917 for the first time since Joseph Pulitzer death on 29 October 1911. Even today, the Pulitzer Prize is a major prize given by the United States of America. The award is administered by Columbia University in New York City.

It was started after the will

The Pulitzer Prize is given in 21 categories. USD 15,000 in cash is given to the winner of each category. In the year 2017, this prize money was $ 10,000. The winner of the public service category is awarded a gold medal. You will be surprised to know that this award was started after the will of Joseph Pulitzer. He was asked to start this award in his will.

This award is given every year by Columbia University. Hungarian-born Joseph Pulitzer was a publisher of the American newspaper St. Louis Post Dispatch and the New York World. He has also been the main face of the Democratic Party.  He also reached the US Congress after winning from New York. At one time, he had opened a front against big businessmen and corruption in America. Joseph helped to keep alive the Statue of Liberty, one of the seven wonders of the world.

Columbia University maintains

In 1904, Joseph prepared his will, in which he described the provisions related to the introduction of the Pulitzer Prizes. He said that the Pulitzer Prize should be instituted as a reward for the best. Pulitzer specifically said that there should be four Pulitzer Awards for journalism, four for drama, one in education and five for traveling scholarships. Initially, three scholarships were given to graduating students on the advice of the Faculty of Journalism at Columbia University.  2 scholarships were for art and music. At present, five scholarships worth US $ 7500 are available to students graduating from journalism at Columbia University.

Online also got preference

In 1997, on the 150th anniversary of Joseph Pulitzer, changes began to be made in this award. The importance of the work being done by the print media in online journalism was understood. In 1999, it was decided to give the Pulitzer Prize for Online Journalism as well.  Online presentation of newspapers was kept in the public service category by the board. In 2006, the board included online content in 14 categories of journalism. From the year 2012, the Bard had fully recognized the digital entry and judging system.
