In ancient times, an old sage arrived at the main gate of the royal palace of a prosperous kingdom. His clothes were tattered, but his face held a remarkable radiance. He confidently told the gatekeeper, "Go inside and tell the king that his elder brother has come to visit him."
The gatekeeper was perplexed. He thought that perhaps the king had a close relative who had renounced the world and taken up Sanyas. He immediately went inside and reported the news. The king was shrewd and generous. Upon hearing the news, a mysterious smile appeared on his face. He respectfully invited the sage inside and seated him on the throne next to him.
The sage lovingly placed his hand on the king's head and asked, "Tell me, younger brother, how are your affairs going? Are you happy?"
The king replied with folded hands, "I am well, brother. Tell me about yourself."
The sage sighed and said, "What can I say, my dear brother! The palace I've lived in for years is now very old and dilapidated. Its walls are shaking and it could collapse at any moment. I had thirty-two servants who served me day and night; they too have left one by one. I had five queens; they too are now old and frail; they can no longer handle any work."
Hearing this, the king looked at his ministers and ordered the sage to give him 10 gold coins.
The sage looked at the coins and said with a smile, "King, this is too little. This much money won't even repair the palace."
The king politely replied, "Forgive me, brother. This year, the kingdom has received scanty rainfall and there's a famine situation. So, for now, you must be content with this much."
The sage replied immediately, "If that's the case, then come with me across the seven seas. There are vast mines of gold there. You already know my strength. The moment I step on it, the sea will dry up, making gold extraction easy. After all, you've already witnessed the power of my feet."
Hearing this from the sage, the king burst out laughing and immediately placed 100 gold coins in the sage's bag. The sage, pleased, blessed him and departed.
As soon as the sage left, whispers began in the court. The ministers and commander, curious, asked, "O King! We know you don't have an elder brother. Then you not only accepted that poor sage as your brother, but also lavished him with gold coins because of his absurd talk? What kind of a miracle is this?"
The king smiled and calmly explained:
"Friends, he was no ordinary beggar, but a highly learned man. He showed me the true essence of life."
1. Brotherly relationship: There are only two forms of fortune—king and pauper. We are both children of God, so he called me brother.
2. Dilapidated palace: He was referring to his aging body.
3. 32 servants: These were his teeth, which have now fallen out.
4. 5 queens: These were the five senses of a human being (eyes, nose, ears, tongue, and skin), which have now weakened due to old age.
5. Drying up of the ocean: When I gave him only 10 coins, he sarcastically remarked that the "ocean of charity" dried up as soon as a glorious king like me stepped near him. He reminded me of my strength and generosity.
The king continued, "His eloquence and wisdom won my heart. He taught me that wealth is not meant for accumulation, but for honoring the deserving. That is why, from tomorrow, I will appoint him as the chief advisor of the royal court."
