Taylor Swift made history at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, becoming the most decorated artist in the ceremony’s history after winning the coveted Video of the Year award.
Swift entered the ceremony tied with Beyoncé at 30 VMA wins. She moved ahead after taking home the night’s top prize for the music video of “The Fate of Ophelia,” a track from her 2025 album The Life of a Showgirl. The singer also received the newly introduced Artist Director award after personally writing and directing the elaborate video.
During her acceptance speech, Swift paid tribute to Dolly Parton, whom she described as the “ultimate showgirl.” She reflected on the late country music legend’s influence and said audiences were fortunate to have shared the world with her.
The ceremony, held in Los Angeles and hosted by rapper Snoop Dogg, also featured the premiere of Swift’s latest music video for “Patient Zero.” The dark, gothic-style production stars actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson and marks Swift’s first video release since her marriage to NFL star Travis Kelce.
The song is among four additional tracks included on The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, which was released the previous week.
Madonna Dominates the Awards
Madonna was another major figure at the ceremony, entering the night with 13 nominations. The pop icon ultimately won Artist of the Year, Best Dance and Best Collaboration alongside Sabrina Carpenter for “Bring Your Love.”
Madonna also earned recognition for her work on Confessions II, winning additional awards for cinematography and choreography.
While accepting Artist of the Year, the 68-year-old singer looked back on her long career and recalled appearing at the first MTV VMAs more than four decades ago. She also reflected on a notorious early-career stage mishap that once made her fear that her career might be over.
Madonna said that the past year and a half had been a period of rediscovering herself and concentrating on creating music she genuinely wanted to make.
Her performance was particularly notable because it marked her first appearance on the VMA stage since her much-discussed performance with Britney Spears in 2003. This time, she was joined by Sabrina Carpenter, while British pop star Charli XCX also made an appearance.
Sabrina Carpenter Responds to Madonna Story
Madonna revealed that Carpenter’s team took several days to respond when she first reached out about collaborating.
After waiting five days, Madonna said she contacted Carpenter directly through social media. The two artists soon met in the studio and began working together.
Carpenter jokingly reassured the audience that her team does respond to messages, but admitted that she personally responds more quickly and suggested contacting her directly.
Lisa Makes VMA History
K-pop star Lisa of BLACKPINK also achieved a milestone by becoming the first Asian solo performer to win the Best Pop award. She received the honor for her song “Dream,” which features Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi in its video.

Lisa competed against several major pop names, including Swift, Ariana Grande and Olivia Rodrigo. During her emotional acceptance speech, she thanked her fans, known as Lilies, and said their support had been essential to her success.
The ceremony also featured several performances and tributes honoring major figures in music, including Dolly Parton and the late George Michael.
British singer Sienna Spiro took home the Best New Artist award, while fellow British performer Raye was among the night’s performers. PinkPantheress and Swedish singer Zara Larsson won Best Art Direction for “Stateside.”
More Major Winners
BTS continued its award-show success by winning Best Group as well as Song of the Year for “Swim.” Olivia Rodrigo received the Best Alternative award for “The Cure.”
Rock legends Nirvana were also recognized with the Video Vanguard award.
With major wins for Swift, Madonna, Lisa, BTS and other leading artists, this year’s VMAs combined career milestones, new collaborations and tributes to influential figures from different generations of popular music.
