The Merchant and the Measure

A long time ago, a very wealthy merchant lived in a city. His business was widespread. But the merchant had a very harsh and greedy nature. He was always looking to take advantage of others.

On the outskirts of that city, an old man lived in his small hut. He sold pure desi ghee to temples and wealthy people in the city. The merchant bought 5 kilograms of ghee from him every week.

One day, the merchant became suspicious. He thought, "This old man is illiterate. Who knows if he'll give me the full amount of ghee?" He took out a scale and weighed the packet of ghee the old man had given him.

The merchant's anger reached the seventh sky when he saw that the ghee weighed not 5 kilograms, but only 4 kilograms 500 grams.

The next day, he called the old man and shouted at him in front of everyone, "You cheater! You've been cheating me all these years! You always gave me less ghee than you promised. Don't show your face again, I won't do business with a dishonest person like you!"

The old man was very polite. He bowed his head and said calmly:"Sir, I'm sorry. I'm very poor, I didn't have the money to buy weights. So, whenever I came to give you ghee, I would put the 5-kilogram sack of sugar you gave me last month on one side of the scale and weigh the ghee on the other."

The entire market was stunned. The merchant's face turned red with shame. In fact, the same merchant had given the old man four and a half kilograms of sugar a month earlier, instead of the 5-kilogram one.
