A major train accident occurred in northern France on Friday evening when a passenger train derailed near the commune of Cléon, south of Rouen. At least 44 people were injured, one of whom is in critical condition.
According to French authorities, the train, which was running between Rouen and Caen in the Normandy region, was carrying approximately 180 passengers at the time of the accident. The accident occurred shortly before 8:00 pm local time (18:00 GMT). Emergency response was immediately initiated, with 140 firefighters and various rescue teams sent to the scene to assist passengers.
An 18-year-old woman, who suffered serious injuries, was immediately airlifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. Images circulating in French media from the scene show a chaotic situation, with three coaches overturned and passengers fleeing the damaged train.
French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot confirmed the level of emergency response and said the cause of the derailment is still under investigation. While the focus is currently on passenger safety and medical triage, local authorities have implemented a mass-casualty response plan to manage the situation.
The state-run railway operator, SNCF, has announced major disruptions to transit lines in the area. While recovery efforts are underway, the company has deployed replacement buses to assist passengers, though officials are urging the public to stay away from the crash site to allow emergency services to fully access the scene.
