In a village lived a man named Shivram. He was a staunch atheist. The mere mention of God would make his blood boil. He considered even conversing with believers an insult.
Once, a saint visited the village. He delivered sermons for several days. The entire village gathered in reverence to listen to his sermons, but Shivram didn't even consider it appropriate to look there.
One evening, he was returning from the fields when the saint's words, floating in the air, reached his ears:
"If you want to succeed in life, make a firm resolution in your mind and work towards fulfilling it with complete devotion. One day, you will surely reap the rewards."
He wanted to ignore these words, but those words echoed in his mind all night. Despite his best efforts, he couldn't forget them.
Finally, he resolved, "I will prove this statement false!"
But what kind of resolution should he make that bears no fruit?
After much thought, his eyes fell on the potter who lived in front of his house. He decided:
"I will not eat every day without seeing the potter's face."
He laughed to himself at this thought. He was confident that this resolution would yield no benefit.
From the next day, he would wake up in the dark and sit on the platform. As soon as the potter came out, he would look at his face and then get back to his work. Sometimes the potter would go out, and he would even have to fast for a day or two, but he never wavered from his resolve.
Six months passed. He saw no profit, yet he remained steadfast—because his aim was not to profit, but to prove the saint's words false.
One day, he woke late. By then, the potter had gone to the mine to collect clay. He headed towards the mine to look for him. From a distance, he saw the potter digging clay and silently turned back.
While digging, the potter suddenly came across four gold bricks. He panicked and looked around. Then he spotted Shivram walking a short distance away.
The potter called out to him, "Hey, brother Shivram! Where are you coming from and where are you going?"
Shivram said, "I've seen what I wanted to see, now I'm going home."
The potter knew he had found the gold. He trembled with fear. If word reached the king, he would lose all his wealth. He made a quick decision and said, "Brother, take half the gold, but don't tell the king anything."
Shivram thought he was joking and moved on. The potter became even more alarmed. He ran to catch him, folded his hands, and said, "Brother, what do you lose by taking half?"
He was astonished. The potter took him to the mine. Seeing the gold bricks, he understood the whole mystery. He silently picked up two bricks.
As he held them, saint's words echoed in his heart:
"Determined determination always pays off."
That day, Shivram's life changed. He invested the gold for the welfare of the village and dedicated the rest of his life to austerity, service, and devotion to God.
Now, the same Shivram, whom people once called an atheist, became known as the village's greatest devotee and servant.
