Bali police are investigating the deaths of an Australian father and his two young children, whose bodies were found in their bungalow in Kuta, a popular tourist area.
The deceased have been identified as 56-year-old Damien John Shaw and his two children—a six-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl. Their bodies were discovered at the family home on Sunday after Shaw's wife, who was away from Bali at the time, raised concerns.
According to the police, Shaw's wife became worried during a phone conversation with her husband. She reportedly heard a child crying in the background before the call ended. Unable to contact her husband again, she reached out to a neighbor and asked them to check on the family.
The neighbor, accompanied by other locals, went to the house. After receiving no response to their knocks, they forced their way inside and discovered the three bodies.
Australian media reports indicate that investigators are considering the possibility of a murder-suicide. However, Indonesian police have emphasized that no final conclusion has been reached yet. Officials told the BBC that the cause and manner of death remain unknown and further investigations will be conducted.
Police stated that Shaw was originally from Fremantle, Western Australia. Western Australian Premier Roger Cook responded to the deaths, describing the situation as deeply tragic.
Expressing sympathy for all those affected, Cook said, "It is a very tragic situation." He also expressed hope that investigators would soon determine exactly what had happened.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths is underway. Police are expected to conduct further inquiries and gather evidence before determining exactly what transpired inside the Kuta home.
The case has drawn significant attention in Australia due to the young age of the children and the shocking manner in which the family's bodies were discovered. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed a motive or the definitive cause of death.
Investigators are speaking with acquaintances of the family and individuals associated with the household to piece together the events leading up to this tragic incident.
For now, the police have urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation is ongoing. Any conclusions regarding the cause of death or the involvement of other individuals will depend on the findings of the investigation.
