The Netherlands has a unique water bridge where water flows above the road and vehicles pass on an underwater road. It's called the 'Veluwemeer Aqueduct', and at first glance, it appears as if the road has suddenly disappeared underwater.
This unique aqueduct was built near 'Harderwijk', Netherlands. Here, a waterway has been built above a busy road. This means that the road doesn't cross over the water like on regular bridges; instead, engineers have created a way for the water to flow over the road.
Viewed from above, it appears as if a small lake or canal has formed above the road. Boats pass through this waterway, while cars and other vehicles continue to move on the road below.
The most remarkable feature of this design is that the road and waterway continue to follow their own paths even as they cross each other. Instead of completely closing the road and building a traditional bridge over it, the engineers chose to create a solution by placing the waterway above the road.
The Veluwemeer Aqueduct is approximately 25 meters long and opened to traffic in 2002. This structure may appear small, but the engineering behind it is quite fascinating.
The Netherlands is one of the countries where engineering is used extensively with land, water, and waterways. A large part of the country lies near or below sea level, so it has extensive experience in controlling water and building infrastructure in harmony with it.
The Veluwemeer Aqueduct is a striking example of this approach. Instead of simply blocking the water or raising the road too high, separate levels were created for both.
The most interesting sight is when a boat passes overhead while vehicles are simultaneously moving on the road below. From a distance, it appears as if the boats are floating above the road, and the cars are traveling in a tunnel beneath them.
However, calling it a traditional "bridge" is not entirely accurate. Technically, it's an aqueduct, meaning a structure that carries water or a waterway over another transportation system.
The biggest advantage of this type of construction is that both boat traffic and road traffic can continue at separate levels within the waterway, without completely blocking each other.
This structure in the Netherlands is also in the news worldwide because it demonstrates that in engineering, carrying a road over water isn't always the only option. Sometimes, simply passing the water over the road can be a better solution.
While bridges typically carry roads over water, the Veluwemeer Aqueduct carried the water over the road.
This is why this site is considered not just a transportation structure, but a remarkable example of modern engineering and creative thinking.
