Princess Indumati of Vidarbha was extremely beautiful and virtuous. Powerful kings from far and wide had come to her swayamvara. As Indumati passed through the rows of kings, garland in hand, she appeared like a torch at night, casting darkness (despair) over the kings behind her.
When she arrived before Prince Aja, struck by his brilliance and gentleness, she chose him as her husband.
The other kings present at the swayamvara grew jealous of Aja's success. As Aja was returning to Ayodhya with Indumati, they attacked him in unison. Young Aja single-handedly defeated them all with his valor and entered Ayodhya with pride.
King Aja and Indumati lived a happy life. They were blessed with a glorious son, Dasharatha. But one day, while they were wandering in the garden, a strange incident occurred.
The sage Narada was traveling through the sky. A gust of wind blew the garland of divine flowers (surapushpa) that was on his veena. The garland landed directly on Indumati's heart. The garland was no ordinary one; its mere touch brought Indumati to life. She was actually an Apsara, forced to descend into the mortal world by a curse, and the touch of that divine garland lifted her curse.
King Aja was devastated by the sudden loss of his beloved wife. His lamentation was so poignant that it could melt even stones. Taking his wife's body in his lap, he asked, "O beloved! How can flowers so delicate take your life? If fate had to take you, why didn't it take me along with it?"
Indumathi's separation, Aja turned his mind away from the royal duties. He crowned his son Dasharatha. Finally, he went to the confluence of the Saryu River and gave up his body through fasting, and reunited with his beloved Indumati in heaven.
This story of King Aja shows that the kings of the Raghukul clan were not only fierce warriors, but also had a deep stream of love and compassion flowing within them.
In this lineage of King Aja, Maharaja Dasharatha was born, and then the most virtuous man, Shri Ram.
