When fire simmering deep within the Earth makes its way to the surface, nature's most terrifying manifestations are revealed. Mount Nyiragongo in central-eastern Africa offers one such terrifying sight, a volcano that isn't just a mountain, but a perpetually smoldering warning.
Fire-Spewing Mountain and Lava Lake :-
Located in Congo's Virunga National Park, this volcano stands at approximately 11,385 feet tall. Its most terrifying feature is the nearly 2-kilometer-wide lava lake within its massive crater, where molten rock constantly boils. Very few volcanoes in the world have such perpetually active lava.
A Tale of Destruction :-
Niragongo's history is filled with stories of destruction. The 1977 eruption claimed thousands of lives in a matter of moments. In 2002, lava swept away large parts of the city of Goma, leaving millions homeless. In 2021, it erupted again, claiming many lives and reducing villages to ashes. Surprisingly, even today, approximately 2 million people live in the vicinity, living in constant danger.
Why do volcanoes erupt? :-
Volcanic eruptions are the result of energy stored within the Earth. When magma and gases accumulate beneath the surface, increasing pressure, a time comes when this pressure creates a way to escape. An eruption is often preceded by signs such as small earthquakes, gas leaks, and steam. Niragongo's lava is extremely thin, so it flows rapidly, engulfing the surrounding area.

The effects of volcanoes are not limited to the surrounding area; they can also affect weather globally. The gases and ash released into the atmosphere alter temperatures. Sometimes they increase heat, and sometimes they increase cold by blocking sunlight. Historically, there are instances when volcanic eruptions have caused year-round weather abnormalities.

Volcanoes have always been a part of human imagination and culture. The word 'volcano' itself comes from the name of the Roman fire god Vulcan. Literature and film have depicted them as mysterious and powerful forces.
