The Reflection of Fear

There lived a powerful lion in a forest. He hunted many animals every day. All the animals in the forest were terrified of him. The animals thought that if this continued, one day the entire forest would be empty.

They all went to the lion together and pleaded,"Your Majesty, you go out hunting every day, killing many animals in vain. If you allow us, we will send one animal each day for you to eat."

The lion accepted this offer.

A few days later, it was a small rabbit's turn. He knew that going to the lion meant death. But he was intelligent. He devised a plan.

He deliberately arrived late. The lion became angry and said,"Why did you take so long?"

The rabbit said,"Your Majesty, I was not alone. Another lion stopped me on the way. He said that he was the true king of this jungle."

Hearing this, the lion became angry and said,"Take me to that lion immediately."

The rabbit took him to a deep well and said,"Your Majesty, he lives right here."

The lion looked into the well. He saw his own reflection in the water. He thought it was another lion and, in anger, jumped into the well. With this, he was finished, and all the animals of the forest were freed from fear.
