Love's True Call

A great emperor—and he fell in love with an ordinary young woman. A very ordinary woman and a great emperor! There was no obstacle. The emperor would give the order—the woman would be happy, her family would be delighted; it would be their good fortune. It was just a matter of giving the order, and the woman would become his. But the emperor was lost in thought. The thought was, "This young woman will become mine as soon as I say it, but the distance between us is so great that she will never forget that I am ordinary and my beloved is the great emperor!" How will this distance be bridged? She will marry me if I ask. She will be grateful, she will be happy, she will be filled with awe, she will thank me all her life; but how will love be born? A feeling of gratitude is not love. Thankfulness is not love! The distance will be so great that how will love exist? How will a bridge be built? How will the relationship be strengthened?

The emperor was lost in deep thought. Something had to be done. A way had to be found. The path he found was worth thinking about. Ultimately, he decided to give up being an emperor; to cease being an emperor.  I should become an ordinary man. Then there would be no gap. There would be no more talk of favors; there would be talk of love.

But there was a risk, and a big one. The risk was that the entire country would call me mad. Hardly anyone would understand. They would all say: I needed a woman, I needed her permission; not just one, but thousands of women were ready. Why was there a need to leave the kingdom for this? People would think I was foolish, crazy. But even this was not a big risk. The bigger risk was that the woman might also think this man was crazy. There was an even greater risk: the woman might, in anger at having missed the opportunity to become an empress, refuse to marry me. Such was the risk.

Still the emperor took the risk. He said that for love, it was necessary to take every risk. It was necessary to take the risk of losing the kingdom, the risk of losing the reputation; and it was also possible that the woman would also lose her. It was necessary to take all these risks, but it was necessary to make way for love.

Even on the path of love, there's not much to lose. Everything can be lost on the path of love, because love is such a priceless treasure.

And this is the story of an emperor's love for an ordinary woman. When someone falls in love with God, the situation is completely reversed. We have nothing to lose, yet everything to gain. The emperor had everything to lose, yet nothing was guaranteed. With God, the situation is the opposite. What do we have to lose? Nothing! And there's no risk. The door to receiving everything opens. Yet people fail to take the step. Still, people fail to embark on this journey. Because whatever we have—however small, however fleeting—we have accepted it as everything. It is our belief. Position, prestige, wealth, family, security, comfort—we have considered it to be a lot. It is something we have thought about, something we have accepted; it is nothing. It is a dream we have dreamed.  It has no connection with the truth.

And death will snatch everything away. No matter how much you hold on, one day you will have to let it go; it will all be plundered. Yet, on the path of God, where everything is to be gained and nothing significant is to be given up, we still lack the courage. Our intellectual weakness is extraordinary!
