The Tale of the Peepal Tree

There was an old woman. She told her daughter-in-law to sell milk and yogurt. When she went to sell it, she saw women watering the peepal tree on the way. Seeing them watering, the daughter-in-law asked, "What are you doing?" The women replied, "We're watering the peepal tree; it brings food and wealth. It helps us find a husband lost for twelve years." The daughter-in-law replied, "So, if you water it with water, I'll water it with milk." The Gujri daughter-in-law didn't go to sell milk and yogurt every day; she would pour milk into the peepal tree and curd into the peepal tree. When her mother-in-law asked for her money, she would say she'd pay after the month was over. The month of Kartik ended. On the full moon day, the daughter-in-law went and sat next to the peepal tree. The peepal tree asked, "Why are you sitting next to me?" The daughter-in-law replied, "Your mother-in-law would ask for your money." The peepal tree asked, "What do I have for it? This is a full, paan-like leaf; take it."  The daughter-in-law took it and put it in the closet. Terrified, she covered herself with a cloth and went to sleep. The mother-in-law said, "Daughter-in-law, bring the money." The daughter-in-law replied, "It's kept in the closet." The mother-in-law opened the closet and saw that diamonds and pearls were sparkling. The mother-in-law asked, "Daughter-in-law, where did you get so much money? If the daughter-in-law comes and sees, it's truly full of money." The daughter-in-law told her everything. The mother-in-law said, "This Kartik month, I'll also water the Peepal tree." Kartik came. The mother-in-law would sell her milk and curd and wash the pot and put it in the Peepal tree. She came and told her daughter-in-law, "Ask me for money." The daughter-in-law said, "Mother-in-law, does any daughter-in-law ask for money?" But the mother-in-law said, "You ask." The daughter-in-law said, "Mother-in-law, bring the money." The Peepal tree gave her mother-in-law a betel leaf pot and a heavy stick. She took it and put it in the closet. The daughter-in-law opened it and saw that insects were scurrying inside. The daughter-in-law asked, "Mother-in-law, what is this?"  The mother-in-law came and saw and started saying, Peepal Pathwari is very bad. You gave you money and gave me hair worms. Then everyone started saying that she watered it hungry for truth. You are hungry for money. Oh Pathwari Mata! You gave the same to everyone as you gave to your daughter-in-law, do not give the same to anyone as you gave to your mother-in-law, shower your blessings on everyone.
