It was summer. The afternoon sun was shining brightly, but a cool breeze blew along the riverbank. The king of the kingdom decided to take a break from his court duties and go boating. So, he set out on a river cruise with his courtiers, servants, soldiers, and his wisest minister.
The river waters were calm. The boat slowly moved through the waves, cutting through the waves. Everyone was in a happy mood. Some were laughing and joking, others were enjoying the natural beauty. Then a mischievous idea struck the king. He often tested the wit of his minister.
The king picked up a small straw from the boat's floor and, smiling, said,"Listen! Whoever can cross the river with this straw will be made king for a day."
Hearing this, all the courtiers looked at each other. No one could understand how someone could cross the river with just a small straw. It was impossible. Everyone remained silent.
Just then, the minister came forward smiling and said,"Your Majesty, if you declare me king for a day, I can cross the river with this straw."
The king laughed. He thought the minister was definitely playing a trick. He said,"Okay, you are king for today. Now prove that you can cross the river with this straw. If you fail, you will be punished."
With this, he handed the straw to the minister.
The minister took the straw and pretended to jump into the river. Then he looked at the soldiers and bodyguards and said in a serious tone,"Today I am your king. It is your duty to protect me."
As soon as he started to enter the water, the soldiers panicked. They ran to catch the minister and said,"No, Your Majesty! We will not let you jump into the river. Your life could be in danger."
The minister said,"Let me go, I have to cross the river."
But the soldiers understood their responsibility. They held on tightly. The boat slowly drifted to the other side.
As soon as they reached the shore, the king smiled and said,"Minister, you lost. You didn't cross the river."
The minister replied politely,"Your Majesty, how did I lose? I crossed the river with the help of this straw."
The king was astonished.
"How is that?"
The minister said,"If I hadn't had this straw in my hand and you hadn't declared me king, these bodyguards wouldn't have stopped me. I would have jumped into the river and probably drowned. But this straw made me king, and the soldiers, fulfilling their duty, saved me. That's why I reached this side safely. So, I crossed the river with the help of the straw."
Everyone was stunned for a moment. Then the king burst out laughing.
"Your intelligence is unmatched. You outsmart us every time."
The courtiers also praised the minister. That day, everyone realized that with intelligence and understanding, even impossible tasks become possible.
Lesson : - Even the smallest thing can be a great support at the right time. Intelligence is greater than strength.
