Transforming Trials: Understanding God's Grace

A gathering of saints was underway. One day, someone filled a pot with Ganges water and placed it there so that the saints could drink it whenever they felt thirsty.

A man was standing outside that gathering of saints. When he saw the pot filled with Ganges water, all sorts of thoughts began to cross his mind.

He thought, "Ah! How fortunate this pot is! Firstly, it's filled with Ganges water, not from a pond or lake, and secondly, it will now be useful to the saints. I will be touched by the saints, I will have the opportunity to serve them. Only a few have such luck."

The pot read his mind and spoke, "Friend, I was lying there empty, like clay. I was useless. I never felt that God had done me justice."

Then one day, a potter came.

He dug me up with a shovel, loaded me on a donkey, and took me home. There, he trampled me down. Then, he poured water on me and kneaded me.  He put me on the wheel and spun me around, then slit my throat. Then he slapped me hard to even me out.

It didn't stop there. Then he threw me into the fire of mangoes to burn me.

After enduring so much pain, I was put out on a donkey and sent to the market. Even there, people were beating me, checking if I was alright. After all the beatings, they even put a price on me—just 20 to 30 rupees!

I kept thinking, "Oh God, this injustice was meant to be done to me."

Every day you inflict a new hardship, a new suffering. It's only injustice that is destined for me! It seemed impossible that God had planned to show mercy!

A gentleman bought me, and when he filled me with Ganges water and sent me to a gathering of saints, I realized that the potter's use of the shovel was also God's grace.

That he had woven it was also God's grace.

Burning in the fire was also God's grace, and being hit by people in the market was also God's grace. Now I realize that everything was God's grace!

Circumstances break us. They disturb us—so disturbing that we even begin to question God's existence. Why don't we all have the strength to understand God's play, to see what the future holds?

In this ignorance, we fail to understand the preparations God makes before bestowing His grace. We simply start cursing Him, saying that despite all the prayers and efforts, God refuses to be pleased and shower His blessings.

But try to think from the heart and with a calm mind: is this really true, or are we simply unable to understand God's law?

You wouldn't let someone who doesn't know how to drive your car, so how could God bestow His grace on someone who hasn't yet fully grasped it? This isn't some ordinary offering; you must cultivate a sense of saintliness in your heart.

Even in the face of God's trials, if we do not deviate from the path of truth and justice, God's mercy is sure to arrive. Some may be slow, others patient.

The deeds of past lives also determine how long it will take to receive God's grace. Like a pot, those who remain steadfast on the path of truth during the testing period make their lives successful.

So what should we do? How should we maintain patience? It's natural for a person to break down, but what should we do to avoid breaking down?

The path of contentment is the only option. What we have is enough; when we start thinking this, we begin to experience spiritual bliss.

The happiest person in the world is one who lives in peace. Why don't you consider that countless people in the world haven't received even as much as God has given you? Why do you look at those who have more than you?
