The Tale of the Wise Old Man

A man owned a very beautiful horse, so rare that even emperors offered to buy it, no matter the price. But he refused to sell it. One morning, he found his horse stolen. The entire village gathered to express their sympathy and said,"How unfortunate! You could have made a lot of money by selling it. You were stubborn and foolish. Now the horse is stolen."

The old man laughed and said,"Don't talk nonsense! Just say the horse isn't in the stable. Let the future come, and we'll see."

Fifteen days later, the horse returned, and it wasn't alone—it brought twelve wild horses with it from the forest. The entire village gathered and exclaimed,"The old man was right! His horse returned, and it brought twelve beautiful horses with it. Now he can make as much money as he wants."

They went to the man and said,"Sorry. We couldn't understand the mysteries of God and the future. But you're great! You had some insight."

The old man said,"Don't talk nonsense! I only know that the horse returned with twelve horses—no one knows what will happen tomorrow."

The next day, the old man's only son was trying to harness a new horse and fell. Both his legs were broken. The whole village gathered again and said,"No one would have known anything—you were right; it turned out to be a curse. It would have been better if the horse hadn't returned. Now your son is crippled for life."

The old man said,"Don't go any further! Just say my son's legs are broken—that's all."

Fifteen days later, the government forcibly conscripted all the young men into the war because the country was going to war. Only the old man's son survived, because he wasn't fit.

The whole village gathered again and said,"Our sons are gone! At least you have your son. He may be crippled, but he's here. Our sons are gone, and the enemy is very strong; they'll all be killed. We'll have no support in our old age, but at least you have your son. Maybe he'll get better."

But the old man said,"Just say this—that your sons were taken away by the government, and my son survived. Don't draw any conclusions."

Just state the facts! Don't consider anything a curse or a blessing. Don't interpret, and suddenly you'll see that everything is beautiful.
