The King, the Boy, and the Demon: A Lesson in Selflessness

In the city of Chitrakoot lived a powerful king who was very fond of hunting. One day, while lost in the forest, he met a sage and his daughter. The sage's teachings transformed the king's heart. He vowed to give up killing animals and married the sage's daughter before returning home.

👹 The Demon's Terrible Condition

On the way, a fearsome demon blocked their path and threatened to devour the queen.  Upon the king's pleading, the demon set an impossible condition:

"If you want to save the queen, you must sacrifice a seven-year-old Brahmin boy within seven days, a boy who comes willingly and whose parents hold his hands and feet during the sacrifice."

👑 An Embodiment of Sacrifice

The king returned disheartened. His minister suggested a solution—a golden statue and a reward of a hundred villages were offered. Finally, a seven-year-old boy from a poverty-stricken family came forward. He said, "If my life can save the queen's and alleviate my family's poverty, then this is a small price to pay."

⚔️ That Miraculous Moment

On the appointed day, the boy was laid on the sacrificial altar in the demon's cave. His weeping parents held his hands and feet. The king, with trembling hands, raised his sword...

Just then, a miracle occurred! The little boy burst into laughter.

Here, the demon asked the king: "O King! Death stands before him, his parents are holding him, yet why is this boy laughing?"

(Think for a moment... What would the answer be?)

The king replied:

"O King, in times of distress, a child first calls out to its parents. Here, they themselves are pushing him into the jaws of death. When parents fail to protect, the king is the protector, but here the king himself stands with a sword in hand. When all other support is gone, the soul remembers God.

This child laughed because he has realized that all relationships in this world are based on selfishness and attachment. He is sacrificing his life for the sake of others, therefore he has no fear of death, but rather experiences the supreme joy of self-sacrifice. His laughter is a commentary on the irony of this mortal world."

Upon hearing the king's reply, the demon flew away, and the king understood that true religion lies in sacrifice and compassion.
