The Brave Thief and the Mysterious Beauty

The kingdom of the mighty King Veerketu of Ayodhya faced a unique problem. Ratnavati, the daughter of the city's rich man, Ratna Dutt, was a matchless beauty, but she possessed a strange nature. She would disguise herself as men and wield weapons and despised the very idea of marriage. Her father was worried, but her daughter would not accept anyone.

At the same time, a cunning thief spread terror in the city. King Veerketu disguised himself and took it upon himself to capture him at night. After a thrilling struggle, the thief was caught and sentenced to be crucified.

A surprising twist in the story! 🔄

On the day the thief was to be crucified, Ratnavati happened to pass by. Observing his radiant appearance and fearlessness, she was captivated by him!  The girl, who hated marriage, insisted, "I will marry only this brave man, otherwise I will give up my life!"

The king refused to give in and continued the execution.

🤔 Mysterious Behavior on the Gallows

While being crucified, the thief exhibited a strange behavior. He first cried loudly, and then suddenly burst out laughing! Everyone was astonished.

Just then, Ratnavati arrived and, mourning, placed the thief's head in her lap. She resolved to commit sati. Seeing her devotion to her husband, the goddess appeared from the sky. Pleased, the goddess granted Ratnavati two boons—first, that her father be blessed with a hundred sons, and second, that her dead husband be brought back to life!

The thief came back to life, and later, seeing his bravery, the king appointed him his commander-in-chief.

🤔 Betal's Question:

After telling the story, Betal asked King Vikram, "King! Tell me, why did that thief first cry when he saw death in front of him while being crucified, and then suddenly laugh?"

👑 King Vikram's Answer:

"Listen, Betal! He cried because he was sad that he could not repay the immense love of his future father-in-law (Ratna Dutt) and wife (Ratnavati).

And he laughed because he was amazed at the strange movements of a woman's heart. Ratnavati, who had rejected great princes, ultimately gave her heart to a thief and was willing to sacrifice her life for him. It is truly impossible to understand a woman's mind!"
