It was January 6, 1982. A passenger plane was flying over the snow-capped mountains of Colorado. The night was bitterly cold, and the weather was extremely harsh.
A passenger noticed the headlights of a vehicle below, shining strangely.
Upon closer inspection, he realized it was an SOS signal, meaning someone was asking for help!
He immediately alerted the pilots. The pilots also saw the signal and immediately radioed the police. What followed was nothing short of a movie.
Rescue teams launched a mission and within hours found a man named Allen Lee Phillips.
He was trapped in the snow, along with his car, where temperatures had dropped to -22°F.
If it had been any longer, he might not have survived.
People considered this incident a miracle at the time.
An impossible life had been saved, and that too in such conditions!
But the story doesn't end there.
Nearly 40 years later, with DNA technology having advanced significantly, police began re-examining old cases.
During this time, a shocking truth emerged.
The same Allen Lee Phillips, once hailed as a miraculous escape, was actually a dangerous killer.
On the same night of January 6, 1982, two women, Barbara Jo Oberholtzer and Annette Kay Schnee, disappeared from Breckenridge, Colorado.
Their bodies were found a few weeks later in different locations. Both had been shot.
A crucial clue was an orange sock found near Annette's body, which was also found near Barbara Jo's. This made it clear that the same person had murdered them both.
DNA testing confirmed that the killer was none other than the same "miraculous escape" Allen Lee Phillips.
This story reminds us that sometimes what appears to be a 'miracle' can actually hide a terrible truth.
