A train traveling from France to England was almost full, with only one seat remaining. Shortly before the train departed, an Englishman arrived and sat down in that seat. A French woman was already sitting next to him.
The French woman's face clearly showed her distress. Seeing her extreme anxiety, the Englishman couldn't help but ask, "Why are you so worried?"
The woman hesitated before replying, "I have more money than is allowed under English law – ten thousand pounds. Having this much money isn't a crime in France, but it is in England. I don't know what will happen to me there." The Englishman said, "This is no problem. If you agree, give me half the money, and the remaining 5000 pounds will stay with you. Even if someone gets arrested by the police, half the money will be safe. Give me your address in London and France. In that case, I will return your money to you." The woman wrote down her address.
After getting off the train, the French woman had passed through the police checkpoint without any trouble when the Englishman suddenly shouted and pointed at the woman, saying to the police, "Sir, arrest that woman! She is carrying ten thousand pounds illegally. Half of it is with me, and the other five thousand pounds are with her. Sir, I am a patriotic citizen of England, and I cannot even think of betraying my beloved country. I deliberately helped her so that my patriotism towards my 'great country' could be proven."
The police searched the woman again and recovered half the money. The woman confessed to her crime. The Englishman also handed over the half of the money he had to the police.
The police officers thanked the Englishman, talking about the damage caused to the country's economy by money laundering. They praised his patriotism and let him go with respect, and sent the French woman back to France on another train.
A few days later, there was a knock on the French woman's door. When she opened it, the Englishman was standing there. In a mixture of surprise and anger, the woman said, "What a liar and a scoundrel you are! You tricked me and had my money recovered by the police, and how shameless you are to stand here in front of me!"
Instead of reacting to anything the woman said, the Englishman handed her an envelope containing 15,000 pounds and said in a flat tone, "This is your money, and the rest is a reward from me."
The French woman was astonished to hear this. What was going on? The Englishman said, "Madam, your anger is justified, but at that time I wanted to divert the police's attention from my bag, which already contained three million pounds. I had to put on this act, which resulted in you losing ten thousand pounds, but for me, it wasn't a costly deal at all!"
Sometimes, a person who loudly proclaims patriotism, respect for the law, and honor can actually be a thief, using patriotism as a cover to protect himself!
