A Fisherman's Bravery and a King's Judgment

Long ago, a king ruled in South India. His kingdom was located on the seashore. He was very fond of eating fish with his meals. His meal was incomplete without fish.

Once upon a time, a severe storm struck the king's kingdom, preventing any fisherman from going to sea to catch fish. The king was deeply saddened by the lack of fish for his meal that day. When he asked his ministers about this, they explained that going to sea to catch fish during such a severe storm was tantamount to risking one's life, so no fisherman was going to sea.

The king announced that anyone who brought fresh fish from the sea would be rewarded with any amount of money. Hearing the king's announcement, the fishermen were tempted, but none were willing to risk their lives.

In the same kingdom, there lived a very poor fisherman. When he learned of the king's announcement, he risked his life to alleviate his poverty. He cast a net into the sea, catching many large fish. The fisherman took the fish to the king's palace, but the king's soldiers prevented him from entering.

When one of the king's special ministers saw the fisherman with the fresh fish, he agreed to take him to the king. The minister knew that the king would be very pleased with the fish and would reward him with a large sum of money. So, he set a condition for the fisherman: he would keep half of the reward. The fisherman agreed, and the minister took him to the king.

The king was overjoyed to see the fisherman's fresh fish. The king asked him to ask for any reward he desired.  The fisherman folded his hands and said to the king, "Your Majesty! I want twenty lashes." The king was surprised to hear the fisherman's words and asked him to ask for something, but the fisherman again asked for a reward of twenty lashes.

The king called his soldiers and ordered them to give the fisherman twenty lashes. The soldiers began lashing the fisherman. After receiving ten lashes, the fisherman said to the king, "Your Majesty! Whatever reward you give me, I will have to give half of it to my partner, so the remaining ten lashes should be given to my partner."

The king was again surprised to hear the fisherman's words and asked for the name of his partner. Pointing to the minister, the fisherman said, "Your Majesty! This is my partner."  He is the one who asked for half of the reward he received for bringing me to you."

When the king looked at the minister, he bowed his head in shame. The king ordered that the remaining ten lashes be given to the fisherman's shareholder. Following the king's orders, the soldiers lashed the minister ten times. The king removed the minister from his ministerial post and expelled him from the kingdom because of his greed. He also rewarded the fisherman handsomely and sent him away.

Moral - The story of the king and the greedy minister teaches us that we should never unnecessarily trouble anyone out of greed.
