There was a simple, devout, and innocent man named Ramlal. His life was spent in devotion and service to God.
Every morning, he bathed, went to the temple, performed prayers, and then spent some time in meditation. After that, he would open his small grocery shop.
By noon, he would close the shop and feed a hungry person in the village, give clothes to a poor person, or donate to a saint.
He was content with whatever he earned in business. He believed that everything he had was a gift from God.
But the villagers considered his devotion foolish.
They would say, "Look at him! He spends the entire morning praying and gives away everything he earns. Hey, is anyone so sensible? He's completely crazy!"
One day, the village's wealthy moneylender, Lalchand, decided to teach him a lesson.
He ordered a beautiful yellow turban and proudly told him, "Ramlal! This turban is for fools. I've never seen a bigger fool than you. You may wear it.
But if you meet someone even more foolish, give this turban to him."
Ramlal smiled, took the turban, and went home.
Some time later, Lalchand fell ill. Despite his wealth, his condition continued to deteriorate.
Ramlal went to see him and said affectionately, "How are you, Mahajan ji?"
Lalchand said, "Brother, I'm getting ready to go now... God is calling me."
Ramlal asked, "Where are you going? Has anyone already sent you a house, shop, money, or family there? You're taking everything with you—your cars, gold, silver, house—right?"
Lalchand said with a heavy heart, "No, brother, nothing will go with you there. Everything will remain here. You have to go alone."
Hearing this, Ramlal took the yellow turban from his bag and, smiling, placed it in Lalchand's hand.
Lalchand asked in surprise, "Why are you giving this?"
Ramlal said calmly, "Because you are a bigger fool than me.
You knew that one day you would have to leave everything behind and go alone, yet you spent your entire life accumulating wealth, deceiving people, and showing off.
You showed neither devotion, nor service, nor kindness. You did nothing for the afterlife.
Now that the time has come, you haven't even prepared.
Tell me, who should wear the turban?"
Tears welled up in Lalchand's eyes.
He said softly, "Brother Ramlal, today I understand that true wisdom is not wealth, but devotion and good deeds."
