A Journey of Self-Reflection

There was a beautiful village called Banspur—snuggled between the mountains, surrounded by green fields. Two close friends lived there—Gopal and Harish. They had been together since childhood, but with very different temperaments. Gopal was quiet, hardworking, and introspective. Harish was sharp, but quick to judge others.

An elderly sage lived in the village—everyone called him "Baba Param." One day, he called both friends over. He took out two bundles and handed them to each of them.

The sage said, "Gopal, Harish... these two bundles are your life companions. One contains your own shortcomings, and the other contains others'. Always keep the bundle containing your shortcomings in front, and the one containing others' shortcomings behind. And remember—never change their places."

Gopal nodded, taking the matter seriously. Harish agreed, but the idea didn't sink in deeply.

They both returned to their homes.  Every morning, while going to the fields, Gopal would look at the bundle in front of him—he would see laziness, haste, and anger in it. He would try to reduce them every day. Gradually, his field became more productive, people's praise for him increased, and his mind also became lighter.

Harish, on the other hand, started well, but within a few days, he got into the habit of ignoring the bundle behind him. One day, while bathing in the river, the current of the water tossed his bundles around, and without him realizing it, the bundle containing his shortcomings went behind and the bundle containing others' shortcomings went ahead.

Now Harish started seeing shortcomings everywhere.

He would say, "Gopal doesn't work hard, it's just his luck."

"The Sarpanch doesn't work properly."

"The villagers aren't smart."

Gradually, he became irritable. His field began to look barren, he lost interest in work, and even his friends started avoiding him.  He thought, "When everyone is wrong, how can I move forward?"

One day, Navneet, distraught, went to Baba Param. He said, "Baba! My life is a mess. Everything used to be good, now everything is bad. Gopal is moving ahead, and I'm lagging behind. Why is this?"

Baba smiled and said, "Son, as long as you had your own set of shortcomings in front of you, you kept improving. But as soon as you encountered the shortcomings of others, you turned your back on your own. You tried to change the world, but stopped changing yourself. That's where the downfall began."

Harish's eyes filled with tears. He realized the truth. Weeping, he said, "Baba, what should I do now?"

Baba said, "Just one thing—put your bundle back in front."

Harish returned home, put the bundles in place, and set about improving himself. Within a few months, his fields began to flourish, and peace returned to his mind.

The villagers learned—Navneet, if you keep the burden of others' shortcomings in front of you,you will never be happy.

If you keep your own burden in front of you—your life will change.
