The Jackal Cub's Journey to Self-Discovery

A lion and lioness lived in a forest. The lioness had two cubs. The lion killed deer every day and brought them for the lioness. They both filled their stomachs. One day, after roaming the forest extensively, the lion still had no prey by evening. Returning home empty-handed, he found a jackal cub on the way.

He felt pity for the cub. He safely carried it home, still alive, in his mouth. Placing it before the lioness, he said, "Dear! I didn't find any food today. This jackal cub was playing on the road. I brought it back alive. If you're hungry, eat it and fill your stomach. Tomorrow I'll bring another prey."

The lioness said, "Dear! How can I satisfy my hunger by killing someone whom you didn't kill, even though he was a child? I will raise him as a child. I will consider this child and consider it my third child."

The jackal cub, drinking the lioness's milk, grew quite healthy and began playing with the other two lion cubs. The lion and lioness treated all three of them equally with love.

A few days later, a mad elephant arrived in the forest. Seeing it, the two lion cubs roared at the elephant and rushed towards it. The jackal cub forbade them from doing so, saying, "He is our sworn enemy. We should not approach him. It is best to stay away from the enemy."

With this, the lion cub ran back home. The lion cubs also returned discouraged.

Upon reaching home, the two lion cubs complained to their parents about the jackal cub's escape and mocked his cowardice. The jackal cub became very angry at this ridicule. With red eyes and fluttering lips, he began abusing them.  Then, the lioness called him aside and said, "It's not right to rant so much. They are your younger brothers; it's better to ignore their words."

The jackal cub became even more enraged at the lioness's persuasion and said, "In what way am I inferior to them in bravery, knowledge, or skill, that they make fun of me? I will teach them a lesson; I will kill them."

Hearing this, the lioness laughed and said, "You are brave, learned, and handsome, but in the clan you were born into, elephants are not killed. It's time to tell you the truth. You are, in fact, a jackal cub. I raised you with my milk. Now, before your brothers learn the truth, run away from here and join your own kind. Otherwise, they will not let you live."

Hearing this, he trembled with fear and joined his pack of jackals.
