There lived a rich man in a village. He had a lot of wealth, but his son was very stingy and lazy. He never worked and was always looking for the easy way out.
One day, the father called his son and said, "Son, earn something today."
The son was lazy, but he went to his mother and, after crying, brought only 1 rupee. When the father returned in the evening, the boy took the rupee from his pocket and gave it to him.
The father wisely said, "Okay, now throw it in the well."
The son quickly threw the rupee into the well.
The next day, the father said again, "Earn something today too, or else we won't have food in the evening."
The boy went to his sister and brought only 1 rupee. The father again asked him to throw it into the well. The boy did as he was told.
The next time, the father sent his wife and daughter out of the house and told his son, "Earn something today, or you won't get food."
The boy was unable to do anything the whole day. By evening, he couldn't find anyone to give him money. Distressed and hungry, he went to the market and met a businessman.
The businessman said, "Brother, take my box and carry it to my house. I'll give you four annas for it."
The boy worked hard and delivered the box to the businessman's house. The businessman gave him four annas. In the evening, the boy went to his father and gave him four annas.
The father said, "Now throw this too into the well."
The boy became angry and said, "Father, this is my hard-earned money. My arms, waist, and back are tired. Do you want me to throw this too into the well?"
The father understood his point. The next day, he gave his son half the kingdom. We should always respect our hard-earned money. What we earn through hard work is what brings us pride and joy. Blindly appropriating or taking for granted what others have earned is not right. Hard work is the true value.
